Is it normal for a 12 year old

PETE -you asked, so I will give my humble and honest opinion. Maybe I am too old and old fashioned.

Doing a little math. Figure 8 hours of school and 8 hours of sleep (normal amount) and one hour for breakfast and dinner leaves 7 hours in a day. Multiply that times 30 days in a month gives 210 hours in a month available for calling and texting (for simplification, I will round down to 200). 4000 calls and 8000 texts (sent and received) equals 12000 times he is on the phone. That means he is calling or texting 60 times an hour or ONCE A MINUTE!!!

Yes, I personally think it is excessive. Please note I did not take out family time nor did I take out time for homework. Adding in those times would mean he is doing something on the phone every 30-40 seconds he is awake every day of the month.

Sorry - my math was a little faulty. I had the little tyke going to school 7 days a week. So, if we add in 16 hours for each weekend times 4 weekends in a month - that would add 64 hours a month available. Instead of 200, it would be 264 (rounded up to 270).

12000 divided by 270 = 44.4 times an hour he is on the phone. Every minute and 10 seconds!!!

Still excessive in my book.

Well it still isn't as bad as your math shows. The calls were not 4000 it was 4000 minutes and the txt msg total includes received as well as send. Received txts don't require him to do anything they just pile up in his inbox. Still it is excessive and I talked to him.

One thing is certain, the engineers that design the phone do a damn good job for it to take that abuse :lmao:

Sorry PETE, I must have misread your post. I stand corrected.

However, 4000 minutes is roughly 70 hours a month (4200 actually - I am using round numbers). If we accept my orginal 270 hours, that leaves 200 hours a month for texts. 8000 sent and received means 40 texts an hour.

Yes, I understand the text can stay in the in box - but name a 12 year old that does not sprint for a phone as soon as it rings. And sure, most of the texts are LOL or whatever - but it is still time that he is more preoccupied with the phone than homework, whatever.

I am not understanding your take on this. All the activity was included in my plan so there were no charges beyond the normal monthly fee.

You prolly don't understand my take on this... As yet, he's a lil adorable man.... Trust me Poppa... You're in, for the ass ####ing of a life time! :lmao:

No he is a pain in my ass but this 1. Doesn't hurt anyone, 2. Doesn't cost me anything, 3. Doesn't hurt him, 4. Will not cause him to go to jail, and most importantly 5. Will not cause me to jail.

I have my daughter on my plan. Granted she is 18 now but I am considering adding my younger two who are now 9 & 10 to my plan in the next few years.

I pay for the unlimited texting because it ensure's that I will not be hit with a huge bill at the end of the month. I check my statement's online and although I can see who she has called and whom has called her, I was not aware that I could specifically view the text messages in detail online, other than the number sent and received..

I say as long as he is within the hour limits you have set & he is doing his school work, chores etc. don't sweat it. Technology has way surpassed what was available when we were his age. Most kids in my 10 year old's class have cell phones.

With Sprint you can do this online....it cost $5 a month or something like that....I don't have it as the ones that are on my bill are either over the age of 18 and don't live in my house(and yes, they pay their bill) or show me all the text anyway(because if she didn't, I take the phone again)
