Is it normal for a 12 year old

I think there's a big difference between a $20K credit card and free unlimited text messages

:duh: You missed my point -- it's the principle of setting limits, not dollar amounts. I used credit card as an example. And unlimited text messages are not "free".

But it's so stylish

Looks like Aps' cell is more dope. :yay:

Call me old-fashioned, but whatever happened to teaching our kids moderation and fiscal responsibility? Why does it always have to be about how much it costs us (parents) when a kid goes over the limit, versus setting a limit and teaching kids to discipline themselves and stay under that limit? My kid gets a certain number of texts per month. He went over once, and paid us for it. He hasn't done it since.

What's next -- do you also give them a $20,000 credit card instead of $500 because they're just going to max it out anyway?!?

P.S. I'm not judging, I'm just askin'.

I remember as a teen I was on the phone all the time talking. I think now kids text more than actually talk. I know Angelbaby's kid is not a phone talker.. instead she does it in text.

So I think the texting is probably equal to the phone talking I did as a kid. Now I hate talking on the phone and text more than anything else. I just checked and I have over 2000 text a month.

My take on kids and cellphones:

It's as much for the parents as it is for the kids. Once mine got mobile and started having rehearsals, practices, a social life, etc, it was nice for them to be able to call and keep us informed, and vice versa. That they enjoy it and chat with their friends is just a bonus for them.

As far as constant texting and talking - um duh. Maybe you all were unpopular nerds in jr. high and high school, but *I* had an active social life and lots of friends.
:diva:
This meant sitting on the phone from the time I got home from school til the time my mother made me call it a night. My step-dad finally got sick of me typing up the line all the time and got me my own line - I paid $3 a month for it. :jet:

To me this is nothing different than when I was a kid, just a different mode of communication. If the grades are good and the chores are getting done, what's the big deal?

I can't see kids helping in their own home for money

I partially agree with you. I think that my parents had a pretty good system for me - There were lots of chores that I had to do just because I was part of the family, no money involved. But if I volunteered to do something above & beyond my usual duties, then they'd part with a few bucks as a reward.

And as far as the phone usage goes, I think that a few people (mostly the females :lmao:) brought up a good point about how much they talked on the phone as a kid. The difference now is, how much calls & texts can be tracked. Some of you probably got away with thousands of hours on the phone without anybody realizing it, as long as it was local calls (no catastrophic bill at the end of the month).

I don't know how many times a family member would call the operator to do an emergency break through on the phone line so they could get me off the phone. My friends would do it too when they had emergency drama that required my immediate attention. :drama: I lived on the stupid telephone when I was a kid.
