Is the "N" word going to be obsolete?

LOS ANGELES - Black leaders on Monday challenged the entertainment industry, including rappers, to stop use of the racial slur that Michael Richards uttered in his tirade.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson and others said they will meet with TV networks, film companies and musicians to discuss the “n-word.”

“We want to give our ancestors a present,” Jackson said at a news conference. “Dignity over degradation.”

Jackson also asked the public not to buy a DVD box set of the seventh season of the TV show “Seinfeld” that was released last week.

Is this what we are all talking about? Stopping the use of the "N" word all together? Do you think it will really happen with these people behind it? Just curious as to everyone's opinions...

“We want to give our ancestors a present,” Jackson said at a news conference. “Dignity over degradation.”

Jackson also asked the public not to buy a DVD box set of the seventh season of the TV show “Seinfeld” that was released last week.

Richards, who played the wacky neighbor Kramer on “Seinfeld,” triggered outrage with a Nov. 17 racial rant against two black men when he was heckled during a stand-up comedy routine at the Laugh Factory nightclub in West Hollywood. A patron recorded the outburst with a video camera phone.

Richards has made several apologies, including one Sunday on Jackson’s syndicated radio program, in which he has said he is not a racist and was motivated by anger.

At the press conference, comedian Paul Mooney said he has used the “n-word” numerous times during stand-up performances but will no longer do so after watching Richards’ rant.

“He’s my Dr. Phil,” the black comedian said. “He’s cured me.”

Asked about free-speech issues, Jackson said the word is “unprotected.”

U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., charged that only situations such as the Richards incident turn mainstream media attention to issues involving the black community.

“This is not simply about whether or not the black community forgives or forgets, this is about understanding that this is pervasive, that this happens in all of our institutions, one way or the other,” Waters said.

No, I think they are trying to make the seventh season of Seinfeld obsolete...why don't they ask the music industry to stop putting out CD's with the N word on them?

Freedom of speech...no way in hell they are going to be able to sensor it in ALL media...MAYBE they could get a "Mature" rating on media that uses it...but no way this will EVER happen.

Maybe the black community should be focusing on better things to waste our government....ooo I don't know...maybe that little insignificant WAR IN IRAQ.

Why don't we just continue this pointless discussion over on the Kramer thread...see how quickly we can get it to over 10k posts...

Nothings going to change...it sucks, I'm white, I'll beat my kids if they say it. If everybody for 1 generation does the same, MAYBE we can get rid of it!

I don't even care anymore. It is being taken to an extreme.

But isn't this what the black community has been seeking all along?

Or is it more the: "Don't do as I do, do as I say?"

Anyway, I have no problem with them speaking out against racial slurs and even banning them from the media - only trashy people talk like that anyway. This may be the first time I've ever agreed with Jesse Jackson.

I haven't been seeking it. As long as nobody says it to me in a demeaning and humiliating way I don't care. Taking a word out of the vocabulary will not change the mindset of the country. When all the other major problems are fixed then we can face this small problem.

I disagree. Words mean something and disrespect is still disrespect, no matter where it comes from.

Black entertainers shouldn't perpetuate that crap and poison young minds with it. It's bad enough when some redneck teaches his kids to talk like that, but to have celebrities that kids try to emulate doing it is just wrong.

I agree 100%. There is no difference between these words:

"Spic"
"Wetback"
"Towel Head"
"Cracker"
"Honkey"
"Chink"

The list goes on. They shouldn't exist, period. None of those ethnic groups would appreciate being called those names - however, they just don't get the media coverage that the blacks get.

All of them equal disrespect and are offensive to the receiver.

About dayum time. Its a HUGH deal when M.R. uses it, but when Chris Rock does it in his standup routine, he's a hero. I've always thought the double standard applied was incredibly stupid and it lowers my opinion of those that defend it's use.

No, it's not.
Let's see you walk down a street in SE DC saying "was up nig#a" to the citizens you meet and then tell me there's a difference.

All of them equal disrespect and are offensive to the receiver. AGREE! Kanye West called bi-racial girls mutts and said they were useless except for video's. I will never buy another cd from him again!
