a decent commercial brand

There's the problem, though - finding a decent commercial brand. Purina Beyond has no dyes or byproduct goober in it, so I like that for a discount/grocery store food in a pinch, but normally he gets Taste of the Wild (from Pepper's), which is grain-free. And honestly, the Beyond is only a buck or so cheaper than the better food.

Dogs have lived on Purina and Alpo for decades and managed to survive, just like kids eat Kraft Mac & Cheese with hotdogs and it doesn't kill them. But some people just want the better nutrition food.

The other thing is, we often get people that are at their wit's end with problems that medicines didn't work. For instance, an employee fed a good food but one of her Lab's had continuous issues with ear yeast. Vet prescribes stuff; it works while she is using it and shortly after, yeast again. A customer came in and told her about "Nutrisca" food by Dogswell and how it helped with her dog's ears.

Six months after switching her dog, he has had ZERO issues. And we now sell it and have recommended it to others who have the same problem.

Having sold high quality pet foods for almost 10 years, I can tell you that most commercial brands are not that great. Some of the bigger brand companies are finally getting smart and removing dyes/food colorings from their foods! It's about time!

And the average vet has little training on nutrition other than a class that Hills taught them. The vet that used to work at All Kinds was an exception to that and she taught me a lot about *good* foods.

And MR, I am not going to get into a contest to see who can pee higher over this. If your dog does great on commercial food and you think your vet gives you good advice on it then :yay: :yay: :yay:
That's great because I will take the advice of a vet who went to the equivalent of med school over that of a person who makes their living selling expensive dog food.

Just like anything else, its buyer beware. You arent necessarily getting 'better nutrition' with no dyes or byproduct. Just like there is plenty organic and even vegan junk food. If you read the labels there are plenty of decent dry foods out there. To each his own

Apollo's vet went to med school and she advises against grocery store dog chow for a variety of reasons.

Nobody really cares what you feed your dog - it's *your* dog - but please don't accuse FF of pushing a certain type of chow just because she sells it in her store. It's like sniffing at the farmer for saying that fruits and veggies are more nutritious than HoHos "just because he sells them".

The Vets only sell the foods that the Sales Rep brings in, and you'll find that many Vets do NOT feed their animals that junk. They get a nice little kick back for those foods.

A couple years ago, I had a good customer joke and tell me I am the only business owner she ever heard of talking someone OUT of buying food!

In fact, I tried to talk a guy out of buying a toy yesterday because he said his dog would destroy it in less than an hour :lmao:

I didn't accuse her of anything. I pointed out her obvious bias and why I would trust the word of my vet.

Take you dog to the vet and ask them about diet. A lot ôf the stuff you hear is :bs: a decent commercial brand will be just fine for most dogs.

Golden/labradoodles tend to be hyper and need a lot of activity. You should have your yard fenced before you get the dog. It is unfair to keep an active dog limited to a leash at all times and it is irresponsible to let you dog out otherwise unless you have a fenced yard. Doodles do really well with underground fences and shock collars. However, those are only as good as you are consistent in training. I'm just guessing thats not a good fit.....

If you end up being overwhelmed in the first couple months to a year I will take him off your hands and he can join our family. My goldendoodle is very friendly and would show him the ropes.

Is it that hard for you to be a nice person, or think that others' opinions might be as good/better than your own?. First, of all Daisy is a girl. I will be just fine raising her, so you will never have her in your life. This certainly is not my first rodeo when it comes to taking care of animals. I saw today that someone referred to you sarcastically as Midnight the magnificent. I first read it as Midnight the malignant. I got a good laugh out of that. Thanks so much for your feedback.

I don't have a fenced yard, and my dogs have been just fine. We live on 10 acres. Just so you know.

Agree. Her website says she is AKC, and all that. This is where we bought the pup from. http://frenchbluebulldogs.com/. My daughter lives in Olney which is much closer so she went to pick out our pup yesterday. It is a family dog after all. We are paying $1250 for this dog. :faint: We eliminated the puppy mill feedback; especially in PA. And, looked at some other breeders that are even more expensive. We did a search for reviews on this breeder, but found nothing. I have felt guilty that I am not adopting from a shelter. But, life is change. I didn't know Apollo was a Schnoodle. He really is adorable. Thanks for your feedback.

$1250 for a dog is absurd! Plenty of rescues out there!

No kidding. If you would bother to read this thread, you would see how guilty I feel. I have always rescued. I am doing this for my daughter who has horrific dog allergies. I am not allergic to dogs so I don't know where her severe allergy came from. I have to think about the future now. But, as always, Hankaroo, thanks for your input. :yay: Oh, and yeah, it is only money. I would rather spend it while I am alive, instead of someone else spending it when I am dead!

What other working or hunting breeds have you owned and trained? you dont have to take my advice, but it will be a shame when your dog runs away or gets hit by a car because you were lazy and just put it out. Fence your yard. This dog is going to be WAY SMARTER than you. Good luck.

Why do you continually respond to dickheads.

I've tried for MONTHS to add another Great Dane to our family through various rescues. The ones I have encountered are a joke!! One wanted my neighbor's information, how many pets they have, if their yard is fenced. Um, no!

I prefer to buy from a breeder.

Rescues are insane. I had to vouch for my best friend who I've known for over 10 years now and was even roommates with in college and after....I know every single thing about her and these people were asking me questions that I couldn't even answer...or wanted to answer! Crazy. I appreciate rescues and what they do but jeezeeee.

There you go again! You do a lot of assuming! When did I say I will just let the dog out alone? I have always been with my dogs when they go out. When did I say I ever had working/hunting dogs? In all my years of having pets, not one has ever run away or been hit by a car. I am sure Daisy will be very smart.

You have yourself a great day, MR!

Like i said, you are not up to the task if you think you can get a working dog the exercise it needs by walking it on a leash. it will only be a matter of time before that dog is running loose in your yard.

I don't know if you would be willing to travel for a dog, but I have found that rescues further south, such as North Carolina are less stringent with the adoption process. I do agree about the local rescues. The lab rescue wouldn't let me adopt because I was missing one out of 14 years of vet records. I did find that ridiculous. Funny thing is, when I applied 3 years ago, they approved me. Makes no sense.

she is an attention whore and her thread had died out

Just someone who loves dogs and hates to see them brought into homes that are not ready. for a working breed that means a fenced yard and a job

Because she won't fence in her TEN ACRES her dog will clearly either die of all those cars zooming around or get super fat and lazy bc she doesn't have a working JOB. You're being dramatic. She hasn't given any indication that Daisy will be walked solely on a leash or that she won't find a way to "work" her. Knock it off.

I warn people all the time about my dog's breed. They're not meant for everyone, even more so than labradoodles. But I'm not a douchebag when I explain.
