...doing that Vrail headshake, slowly, side to side and a wry 'what are y'ah gonna do' look on her face. It seems to happen every time I get a great idea.

???

#2 has NO clue what is going on mechanically and I didn't expect she would. Balancing the clutch and gas is just making her head explode. On the plus side, she has grasped that clutch in, no brake, car will roll free/ stick in neutral, no brake, car rolls free. Probably 40 stalls. Maybe only 15- or so no stalls but pretty rough. She started and shifted 1st, then 2nd a couple times. Pretty rough.

All in all, starting from dead zero idea as of two hours ago, she could go somewhere if she had to and NO ONE got in her way.

It's a good start!!! Hang in there!!! :huggy:

I learned to drive on a stick as well. Both of my paretns cars were manual, all of my cars have been manual and my boyfriends truck is a stick. I have only driven an automatic a handful of times and the first time was horrific. Either way I am glad I learned. And a few pointers from when I was learning. First I learned to start in second gear then moved to first. Figured if I could start it in second without chocking it I would be easier to work on first. The other thing was I learned with my shoes off. That way I could feel the gears grabbing through the pedals on my feet. Helped me feel when to bring the cluth up and when I wasnt giving enough gas.

Just some ideas

All the kids in my family learned how to drive in an automatic, and drove family cars for the first few years. Then when my parents bought used cars for my sisters to drive at college, they bought them manuals. Told them, "if you want to drive, you'll learn how to drive stick." Then, as the youngest, when one sister would graduate and buy a new car, I'd get their ragged handmedown manual camaro. It was FUNNNNNNY having my father teach me to drive stick. He didn't tell me about the feathering the clutch as you get into the gas when you start out on a hill, and I must have rolled down the hill a dozen times before he figured out what he forgot to tell me. Glad I learned how though. My first car that was MINE was a stick, and my current car is a stick. I love it. Easy to drive in traffic too. Just put it in 2nd and crawl along.

My ex husband taught me before we were married. If I remember correctly, I believe he proceeded to a full on beer recovery plan for himself - or kill me! And I just can't imagine ANYONE - EVER wanting to kill me!

... I think that's best because going from a manual to automatic is no-brainer.
Till you take off from a light and try to step on the clutch and wind up hitting the brake instead :yikes: The brake pedel in an automatic is usually twice as wide in an automatic trans car.
Actually quite a difference, can't downshift in corners and an automatic doesn't slow down when you lift off the gas.

This is one ugly friggin' truck, too. I told him, at least we won't have to worry about her picking up any guys in it. It looks like birth control on wheels.

I don't know. I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. The uglier the truck I drove when I was young, the hotter guys I got. Now I drive a honda and no one looks at me.

I think the ugly vehicles must attract additional attention or something.

I had to teach myself to drive a manual. It didn't take me too long to learn after sitting in traffic to get back across the border into the US.

Yeah there's something aout a girl in a truck/4x4 or a sporty two seater that bumps them up a point on the 1-10 scale. Sorry Vrai :lmao:

Larry, did you get the Toyota pickup? If so, they're not so bad to work on. You'll get pretty good at swapping clutches in NO time! :lmao:

:lmao: The first automatic that I bought after years of driving a clutch..I was just having a good time driving it home and when I had to stop I totally forgot I had an auto and took my left foot and went to push the clutch in and just about put myself through the wind shield.....

I'm more....worried about losing a clutch or two.

:jameo:

Like I always say: "grind those gears until they fit." :lmao: Hang tough, Larry. She'll learn to drive a clutch and you learn how to replace one. A win-win situation. :yay:

I learned to drive a clutch when I was about 21 and had driven manual transmission vehicles until about 7 or 8 years ago. My current car has an "Auto Stick" feature that lets you shift without a clutch but it's not the same. :ohwell: My next car will have a 5-speed in it, guaranteed.

 That's how I discovered the Brake pedel on an an automatic is wider than on a stick
