Mast Cell Tumor - Boxer

I am just curious about why to give Benedryl to a Dog with Cancer. I've never heard of that before.

My boxer was just diagnosed with MCT on Friday. I'm a mess. I read the "Damn Dog" thread with Pixie and got a lot of info from there but my question is.. I took her to Three Notch and saw Dr. Yasuda. I LOVE her but has anyone dealt with MCT and her? I'm thinking about driving to Calvert to see Dr. Brown and get a 2nd opinion.

Can someone lead me in the right direction? My brain is sooo confused and all I can think about is my poor pup.

Also... Can this kill her? I mean I know its cancer and cancer kills but it seems like you can just remove these things and move on.

My doc said nothing about the Benedryl. Should I start her on it anyways?

I took my Alex to MASH in Huntingtown and Dr. Bruce Nwadike did 2 cancer operations (tumor removal), Alex did well. While not he same kind of cancer as your boxer has, Alex did very well under Dr. Nwadikes' care. The two major operations were expensive, but worth every penny!
Dr. Brown did follow-up and after fighting for 3 years, we ended up having to put Alex to sleep.

I would take ANY of my animals to see him again!
Good luck with your pup, and ask all the questions and get al the 2nd, 3rd, 4th opinions you can get!

Benedryl stops the bodies auto-immune system from overacting to a allergin. The body produces histamine as a response.
It (Benedryl is an "antihistamine.")

Mast cell tumors are tumors involving cells that contain granules of histamine. Dogs with mast cell tumors experience chronic inflammatory symptoms due to circulating histamine. Antihistamines such as Benedryl may be helpful given long term.

Thank you! I know about the Histamine Responce, but didn't know that Mast Cell contain Histamine.

Think when you have a cold..and your nose runs and runs and you cant breath..even days after your cold is gone. You nasal passages are inflamed, swollen because of your bodies immune systems response and the release of histamine to get rid of the cold virus, (runny nose, stuffy).
So we take an anti-histamine, which in turn reduced the swollen nasal passages, and in a few days we feel human and stop living with the box of kleenex, :)
The mast cells don't contain histamine, but due to the nature of the swelling and inflamation because of the histamine response ...Benadryl seems to work to stop the production of histamine and thus reduces the swelling of the tumors.
It is like a vicious circle of cause/effect/cause/effect.

Thanks everyone. I'm still waiting to hear back from Dr. Yasuda.
We initially took the pup in for other issues so now we have to wait for that blood work to come in. I went in there on Fri night so I'm guessing she should be calling me anytime now... right? I hate waiting!

I would definitely call them. It won't hurt to call them. All they can say is "its not in yet". Or, maybe it is in and they haven't had a chance to call you yet.

Blood work came back ok :) so no kidney issues which is what we brought her in for in the first place...

also My Vet, Dr Yasuda @ Three Notch, mentioned that the cancer was in a good spot. Its on her front thigh and that she can get a good chunk out. Does anyone know anything about her? I LOVE her and take all my pets there but they have never had issues like this. She said that the cost of removal would be between $660 and $800 and might fluctuate a little depending on how long it takes. Does this sound right?

That IS GOOD news Manolo! If you feel comfortable with Dr Yasuda, then go with her. The only other thing I'd ask about, is if the Tumor can be shrunk with something a little more Powerful than Benedryl. Something like Dexamethasone, which is a Steroid. I say this only because we used that for Human Cancer Patients, to shrink Tumors in the Brain. Cancer is actually a Virus, and it spreads when in contact with air. If she can deactivate it by either radiation, or Direct Hit Chemo, and then remove the tumor.

Any update??

I offered Manolo a Vet Manual to read, that might help her with questions reguarding the Mast Cell. I haven't heard a word, and am hoping that all is well with her Dog. I have the manual in my car, in the event she calls me, and wants the book. I hope we hear GOOD news soon.!

Hey guys

Thanks for the concern :)

We have been doing lots of research and talking to vets, getting second opinions and we have decided that Dr. Yasuda is going to to the surgery on March 15th. I still need to call Catt... which I just have not been able to do yet. My pup doesnt even seem to know that anything is wrong :) Shes so beautiful :)

Thank you. I'm going to work from home the day after her surgery so I can be home with her. I'm not sure how the recovery goes but if I had surgery I know I would want my mom there :)

Hey I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to answer your question back in Feb, I had been off the pet section for a bit. Hope all goes well for you guys, prayers are with you.
