I wonder what the actual chances are for us knocking something like that down? Is it 99%? 75%? Anyone know?

If you can believe what the media was reporting this evening try 60%.

I think the real question here is if they really did fire a missle at the U.S and make a strike,, how long would they continue to be a country?

well, unless democrats were in office, then we would all apologize to them for existing and we would start eating rice from a bowl with our dirty incrusted fingers.

I remember reading something on the news - they've tested this missile defense thing, and it worked 9 out of 13 times.

This would be a really good test though. In the other tests we knew what to expect of the target missile. Look pretty bad though if we missed. Oops, and hit N. Korea.

This cat and mouse game continues to go on between us and North Korea. They're determined to test a long range missile and we're threatening consequences if he does so. And what are the consequences? Will we shoot it down? Will we blow up the military base from which it was launched? No. We'll send Jimmy Carter over there to promise them some of our latest nuclear and military technology if they'll just calm down.

There is late word this morning North Korea wants to negotiate. They're demanding direct talks with the United States over their threatened missile launch. One of the goons at the U.N. said "We are aware of the U.S. concerns about our missile test launch. So our position is that we should resolve the issue through negotiations."

What are they looking for? Money. They make a threat. We threaten back. They say they want to talk. We talk. They make demands. We call Jimmy Carter to see how to meet their demands.

There's also the likelihood that we'll continue to pursue the toothless "stop or I'll say stop again" strategy with North Korea. North Korea will fire its missile, we'll tell them how mad we are, and then we'll go back to funding earmarks.

If I were President, I'd say, "Okay, how's this for some negotiation: you launch a missle, we blow your whole country up. Let me know what you decide. :coffee: "

There are two things that will go a long way towards global peace...

#1. A permanent US ban on imported oil.

#2. Obsolescence of long range missiles.

As to #1, we have a strong national interest in the stability of the free flow of oil at natural market prices. This is impossible because so much oil comes from inherently unstable places. Add to this the vulnerability once it's out of the ground and on board a tanker. Starting January 1, 2007, ramp down imports by 1/10th of current levels for 10 years. Maybe make it over 20 years. Just start eliminating the primary source of unrest and global violence.

As to #2, technological advances WILL reach a point in time where the most sophisticated missile and the least sophisticated will be rendered useless through a combination of the ability to interfere with launches, guidance and physical elimination; shooting them down.

Both of these goals are in our national interest. Both are feasible.

We don't have to put up with the threats of North Korea in their latest feeble attempt at getting attention in order that others will help them fix their own messes. We just choose to put up with it.

We don't have to interfere with regional politics in the middle East if it no longer affects us. We just choose to.

Let's choose to move on.
