I saw the headline of an article today about Lowe's admitting they lost almost $1 Billion to theft and other "shrink" for fiscal year 2022.
That was about $200 Million more than each of the previous 2 years.

That's because in part people walk out with a cart full of merchandise and the employees don't go after them. I saw that happen one day, and the clerk said they just are told to let someone know so they can check the surveillance camera to try to get a description of them, but they don't try to stop them and the thieves know this.

Employees are told this to avoid the possibility of personal injury. The ramifications of an employee getting hurt, or worse, is not comparable to the theft loss.
