Exactly! The newer models are way more efficient. And what folks with heat pumps and high electric bills are not paying attention to is that folks with propane or oil and smaller electric bills are still paying out the wazoo for heat... just to a different vendor.my coworker had a new one installed.... her electric bill dropped by half

now I have Washington Gas.... and im lucky my bill is still very low.
AND.... dont forget about the Aux Heat... many are running on Aux Heat due to how cold it is.

Right like me who only has the temperature inside set at 65-68 when we are home and 58 or so when not home, and I'm still using up around 100 gallons of heating oil a month which equates to about $440 a month to heat about 900 sf. On top of that add the $240 electric bill ......
Our bill is always high. They keep sending us letters showing we use more power than our surrounding neighbors. I'm surprised they haven't raided our house looking for a pot garden! We have a disable boy and he sleeps with a TV on all night and during the winter, we have to run a floor heater to keep his room warm and those eat up the nickels for sure. He also runs a CP. AND, we need to run anywhere from 3-5 loads of laundry EVERYDAY. All these add up. I can't even imagine what our bill will be this month. !000.00?

I'm sure that would be us if we could use the oil heat. It apparently has a leak and hubby does not want it fixed. Doesn't want to pay to keep it filled. We were quoted for a new system, heat pump. Ugh! I hate spending that much money on something that's a necessity and not a want (like new floors, well they are kind of a need). Being a grown up sucks!

I am going to get one of those energy audit's done to determine where best to spend my money. Having a crawl space, the floor is always cold during the Winter, so I think that is where I will start the insulation, under the house.

OMG... i tell my coworkers this all the time... cuz my house is set to 63 (was 60 until i pulled up the carpet and its concrete now)
I have had a few 4 dog and 1 cat nights
then 1 cat moves and you have at least 8 paws hitting you in the face

$341/month for fuel oil. Twelve months a year. Plus $150 to $220 for electric (water heater, stove, etc.).
In fairness I have to say that SMO owes me money almost every year.
This thread just proves what I've said for over 30 years, this area is just a bit too cold to have heat pumps for heat.
$448 this month and I would say it was significantly colder this billing cycle. Turns out that our auxiliary heat was NOT working as I suspected. We got that fixed about the third week of the four week billing cycle. My guess is that the heat pump was just running at full blast trying to keep up and was not able to resulting in high electricity use. Last year our highest electric bill in the winter was in the low $300s. Last year must have been much warmer because we never received a bill like this and the auxiliary heat couldn't have been working then either.
$125 for last billing cycle.

My furnace stopped producing heat yesterday evening. The fan was running but just blowing cool air around the house. I put a big space heater in the hall near the air intake and at least the air blowing around is a tad warmer. I have a Gold service plan with Griffith (includes emergency service at no extra charge), but when I called yesterday evening, they said due to the roads being so bad they couldn't send anyone until today. Still waiting. Obviously my electric bill is going up right now as I run 3 space heaters to try to keep the temperature up to 58/60 degrees.
