I know it's not PG county, and that it's all volunteer(somewhat), but this is exactly why St.Marys/Calvert/Charles need paid people. Because if it takes 15minutes for first responders to get to any type of incident, those 15minutes are crucial in getting any type of help to the victims. I was dumbfounded. Then the cops that were there... I won't even get into that. And don't think I'm making the argument for career because my husband is career. He volunteered in PG County for 8 years before he was hired by PG, which he only applied for because working at Home Depot full time wouldn't support the child we had on the way back then. He HAS thought seriously about volunteering in St.Marys because of the response times down here, etc., but knows many PGFD employees who have done so, and have basically paid the repurcussions because of it. He wants to, but is afraid of what may happen, so he flip flops on the decision. It sucks.

The girl was 6yrs old and somehow the seat belt caught her around the neck and was choking her.

And if the Chief is who I think it was, he showed up with his daughter in the truck, to which he let sit there all by herself..on the side of the road. I heard her screaming, and I thought it was the child from the crash, but then saw his kid in the back of the truck freaking out. Really great.

I don't know, it just opened up my eyes as to how bad it is down there. I've always heard about the response times, but to see it first hand just blew me. I really hope they can either recruit a lot more volunteers(that can drive the pieces as well), and are available during the weekdays, or just get some career staff to cover the days Monday-Friday(since the nights and weekends seem to be ok). It's scary.

It's the Seventh. It's rural. What do you expect? It's not Lexington Park, Hollywood, Leonardtown or Mechanicsville, and even they have their share of problems from time to time. One reason why it could've taken awhile is because of the bridge work going on on 234. They may have taken a detour up Chaptico Road, or they could've had to wait for traffic to clear the bridge.
It doesn't take first responders in SMC 15 minutes to get to any incident. EMS usually gets out in about 3 minutes, with FD either before or shortly thereafter depending on where you go. A drive from a FD to the longest first due can in fact be 7 or 8 minutes. Mechanicsville -- who has one of the biggest first dues in the county, for instance, covers from the county line to Oakville and back through to Wicomico Shores. That is a huge first due. When you factor in rush hour traffic, it can take them some time to get where they need to go aswell.
If you live in Lusby, he needs to think long and hard about where he wants to volunteer. Solomons, your fire department, needs ALL the help they can get. If he can drive, that's an even bigger plus -- because that's what they really need. I understand being concerned about getting in an incident anywhere, because the last thing anyone wants/needs is to have their house burn down, get into an accident, have someone they love fall out, anything. But believe me, for the majority, we as a volunteer system are doing everything we can to improve our response times. Do we get out in 30 seconds like a career system? Not always. Do we take forever to respond? No. I'll admit, our days are hard -- moreso on the EMS side than the fire side. However, if it is a life threatening situation, rest assured the proper personnel will be sent.
I'm sure your aware of the term 'risk vs reward.' We can come flying down the road at 90 MPH in trucks loaded with water and ambulances loaded with gear, and raise our risk of not getting to you at all ten fold. We like to get to you as quickly as possible, but we understand that you want us there. What happens if we don't make it, though?
Understand that I'm not making this personal or taking it out on you, or anyone else. I understand your concerns, and as a citizen, I can relate with you greatly. However, I'm just defending the brothers and sisters I go into battle with. We face great challenges everyday, and we do our damndest to make sure our citizens are the most protected they can be.

Here's a thought for you --- The guy with his child could have heard the call while picking him/her up from school --- they go out of their way!!!!! You have complaints -- go back to PG County and your crime!!!! Our emergency service personnel are all volunteer!!!! Go look up the definition if you don't understand it. I have personally had to call them more than once and I can attest to the fact that they are more caring and concerned then your paid personnel in PG county.

Ladies & Gents,
My husband and I were directly behind this lady when she wrecked and saw the whole damn thing go down. Thankfully for her & the kids, my husband is a PGFD Firefighter in the process of becoming a Paramedic. Per herself and the little boy, the mother fell asleep. She hit the tree and that's when the car flipped. Had that tree not been there, she would've went right into the house straight ahead and into the living room, where a woman was sitting watching TV. It's a shame when the little boy told the mom before they left the house she should take a nap first because she was tired. What if she had killed her own children? I don't understand people like this. But anyway, one thing I learned from this: I hope I NEVER wreck in St.Mary's County. It took 5 minutes for 2 cops to arrive, and 15 minutes before the first ambulance arrived. Ridiculous! And those are from the times that I called 911. The little girl was in bad shape (couldn't feel right leg, complaining of neck/back pain) and my husband said she AND the mother needed to be flown out. But somebody made the great decision to only fly the mother. I sure hope that little girl is ok! As well as the little boy, too. But he initially was only complaining about his wrist hurting, so hopefully that was the extent of his injuries. Many thanks and kuddos to all of those who assisted my husband in getting the children out and cutting that poor girl down from her seatbelt. I was in the vehicle with our daughter watching and got really freaked out when I saw them pull the 2 children out. I feel for them and hope they are all ok!!

Do you thinks she fell aseep on purpose? Why would you say you don't understand people like this? She did not do it on purpose. And then you are gonna complain about the response time for help? Do you live here? I have seen rescue come through town and it really makes me mad cause of the idiots that will not get out of the way. It is hard for them to get through traffic sometimes. You were better off not saying anything.

So you think because someone gets paid, it will make them get to the scene quicker? I appreciated our volunteers and think they do an awesome job. It's the idiots like you that are moving down here, messing up what used to be a beautiful county. Now it's being overrun by transplants that b!tch about every little thing.

I am a 'transplant' and am fairly happy here (fairly meaning a reason unrelated to the area). Just because a few people complain does not mean every transplant should be lumped into that group.

The problem I had with her falling asleep was her 8/9yr old son TOLD my husband that his mother said she was very tired but had to go somewhere/do something. The 8/9yr old CHILD told his MOTHER do not drive, your too tired, go take a nap. She didn't listen to her own son, and look what happened. THAT's what I have a problem with.

No, but when volunteers have to come from their houses, jobs, whatever, just to respond to all these incidents, racking up the response time greatly. If paid personnel were in place Monday-Friday during the days (because that's when most these stations fail), we wouldn't have this problem now would we?

Did any of you people actually read what I wrote? You just read what you wanted to and now want to attack. The response times down here are terrible because the volunteers aren't getting it done during the day because yes, people have jobs and other responsibilites during the day. damn, you people really need to re-read what I wrote. What if that was you or your family in any emergency situation down here that took that long to respond? Seconds are crucial in getting aid. Chill the f*ck out.

Me thinks you should just keep your clueless ass out of my lil podunk county. I mean we all know how safe PG is. :killingme
Stay up there, we don't need or want your whiny ass. :yay:

How am I clueless? I read the papers. I see the stats of stations failing. Who cares about PG County? I don't live there; just work there, dumbass. I live in Mechanicsville. I've seen first hand how long it takes for them and others to get out the station. That's all I'm saying. We donate money every year they come around asking. We support the volunteers. Just saying that the response times down here in St.Marys County are ridiculous.

Dear mmesser0,

You are out of bounds and alot of forumites defend what is ours, in our county. I think you just best drop the whole thing.

mmesser0, step away from the keyboard. You are fighting a losing battle with this one.

Thanks for stopping and assisting, but your opinions about our county are not wanted nor appreciated.

Guess what Einstein, even with a paid crew, it still takes 15 minutes to cover 10 miles at that time of day. What part of "we don't have a station on every corner" don't you get?? Here's an idea, YOU pony up the funds for the paid crews.

We've managed just fine for the last 75 or so years so I suggest you Chill the f*ck out. Don't like the response times? Move.

I'm glad you get it. All these other people on here read what they wanted to. We actually live in Mechanicsville now. We were in Lusby and the Solomons station on Little Cove Point Rd failed miserably all the time. It's sad. But during the day, people work and have to take care of other responsibilites they may have. When my husband volunteered in PG, he'd work at night for that very reason. I don't know, we could sit here and beat the subject to death with a stick. My only thing I was stating was we always hear about the response times down here in St.Marys and I was actually able to witness it first hand. We've been fortunate to never have to call 911 for an emergency ourselves, so that's the first time I've seen it. Thanks for understanding and not being a dick like the others. I'm not attacking the system, it's more or less the county because they have known about the problem for a while. But like most places, they'll be re-active instead of pro-active.
