Well I've been here 48 years and take great notice.

I'm not going to get in a pissing contest about who's been here longest. :lmao: Just letting you know I'm not a complete noob.

mmesser0's criticism was very condenscending. She sounds like some out of towner just chomping at the bit to rag on the local podunk system when she doesn't know her ass from a hole in the ground. ... If you or mmesser0 or anyone else have a better idea, lets hear it. And stay the hell out of my bank account with your ideas too!!

I don't have any better ideas, because I've generally been happy with the response that I've seen from fire & rescue down here. I'm from Cecil, which is also volunteer, so I'm familiar with the process. I just get a kick out of the defensiveness that exists here in St. Mary's. Cecil is a very similar county; mostly rural but with more outsiders coming in all the time. They just don't quite have the same defensive, "don't you dare criticize us!" attitude.

What's wrong with loving where you're from?

It's called pride. :yay:

This is why I apply tourniquets to my arms, legs and neck every morning, loosely of course. If I unexpectedly sever an artery the tourniquet is already there, I just have to tighten it. :yay:

I think Obama should appoint you "Vehicle Safety Czar".

mmesser0, seems you have some spare time on your hands. Why don't you step up and volunteer for your local RS or FD? I'm sure Mechanicsville could use a few more volunteers! And before you ask, yes, I've done my time 17 years worth! I think once you see how many hours theses people put in training, going on actual calls, clean up and fund raisers, you'll appreciate that 15 minute response time.

Anyone have a COMPLETE list of all the response times for PG County? I'd love to know what their average total response time is from 911 call to arrival on the scene. I'd bet it's greater than the average St. Mary's County response time! But lets break it down even further. Wonder what there response time is for a CPR in progress call to get the first rescuer on the scene is. I'd bet 85% of the CPR in progress calls in STM have at least a BLS person on the scene in 3-8 minutes!

Fair enough. You're right though, that switch gets flipped and we do go off. :duel: :proudofourlilpodunkcounty: :lmao:

You have to realize that these volunteers are our friends, family, and neighbors. They sacrifice greatly to provide a service that we need. I think you can understand our loyalty.

I can understand it to a certain extent. There wasn't any steady flow of outsiders till the Navy barged in uninvited, relatively recently. Cecil has always been the halfway point between Baltimore & Philly, and has more practice ignoring anyone who doesn't like the way they do things.

I do. And gave them a well-deserved compliment. :yay: Just saying, you can always tweak the system to make it better.

Good idea. I've never been a volunteer for EMS/Fire so I'd never dream of criticizing response time. Unless I was willing/able to walk in their shoes, I'd keep my mouth shut and appreciate that anyone is willing to save lives for no pay. I give them all the respect in the world. They have such an important job. It's difficult for me to understand how they can even find the time to volunteer, in addition to working a full time paid job and possibly raising a family.

As for paid positions, like others have said there's no guarantee that response time will be any better. Try going to the ghettos of NYC and having an auto accident there. There are many, many times that the first responders can't even respond to an accident scene because they're all busy with shooting victims, domestic disputes, violent attacks, etc. It's common for it to take an hour for them to arrive at an accident scene. So when I read that someone was complaining about 5-15 minutes, I was amazed. To me, that seemed pretty damn good!

Not to change the subject, but back in the early 90's when I was a volunteer, we had a ignorant ass of a state trooper that used to sit near the intersection of 235/245 and stop the cars responding to the RS and FD for speeding. Sometimes they were doing 5 over the speed limit, sometimes 15, but as long as he knew they were responding to a call and had FD/RS tags, he pulled them over and ticketed them. Yep, I was the proud recipient of one said ticket.

Sad part is, he lived in the same district that we were trying to serve. It was a shame when his house caught on fire and everyone made sure they did the speed limit to respond to the call. :killingme That's karma. I think the response time was still less than 15 minutes.

If you're familiar with that section of 234 (and I think you are) you know there will never be a fire house in that neck of the woods. The population just does not support it.

Oh Mechcanicsville has been wanting to put a station on 234 for years, and even asked the county to give them land at the front of Chapitco Park (Soccer Fields) just last year. They want to be closer to Wicomico Shores because it really is a long long way from their firehouse or any fire dept from Charles to get there. Problem with Mechcanicsville building another station out 234 area is they dont have the staffing, their second station in Golden Beach is deserted and hardly ever has a crew run from there.

And I live in Wicomoco Shores and I'm just content to have themarrive when they get there. Price I'm happy to pay for having a lil privacy. :yay:

I really am a firm believer that our response times aren't the best because of the distances of our fire departments and rescue squads. Most of the fire stations in the county are located centrally. They try to place them in the center of their response district so the travel times can be as equal as possible. Does that always work? Nope. Is it effective? Yes. The rescue squads fail more often than the fire departments, but that's because the rescue squads can run two, three or four calls at one time. Unless it's a storm of some sort, fire departments usually run one at a time.
To answer the PG question, I'm sure their response times are better, but their time taken to get on scene probably takes as long, or longer than ours. PG has paid FD and EMS, but they're shiftmen and women that are getting furloughed.
