Portlandann:
I moved here about 16 years ago & the first thing that "freaked me out" was seeing an Amish horse & buggy tooling on down the road (I'm from the Boston area). I knew then the kind of rural area I was headed to.
If you study the maps of this area, you will see that we are pretty much isolated in the southern part of the state, surrounded on 3 sides by water... a dead-end if you know what I mean. That by itself sets the standard of what "attractions" or lifestyle we have here. No malls (nearest one is in Waldorf, about a 40 minute ride from Lexington Park). Major restaurant chains just now starting to set up shop here. One movie theater (older, needs replacing).
The Navy base here (Patuxent River) is a major testing base for the Navy and is the primary source of employment - government jobs, contractors, and all others that support both of those. Unemployment here is well below the national average (2.6% now vs. national average of 5%).
Culture - 70 minute ride to DC, 90 minute ride to Baltimore, 60 minute ride to Annapolis. Some small local community theater (Port Tobacco Players). St. Mary's College is great and holds some good cultural events - best being the summertime River Concert Series, a free Friday evening outdoor concert series all summer "on the green."
If you like boats, fishing, being on the water...this is the place to be. Great seafood places. Chesapeake blue crab & oysters are the staple seafood here. Great rockfish also.
Past few years have seen a building boom due to expansion of the base. State/County taxes are high. See

for the official county website. Good information there. Local government is County run. Board of County Commissioners runs the county with the day-to-day operation handled by a county administrator. Leonardtown (5 miles northwest of Lexington Park) is the county seat. Volunteer rescue squads and fire departments. County Sheriff's department and Maryland State Police provide law enforcement. St. Mary's Hospital is the only hospital in the county. No trauma room - all serious medical cases are flown "up the road" by State Police or MedStar helicopters.
You have kids coming with you? Fair mix of public & private schools here. Continuing education for adults is good. St. Mary's College, College of Southern Maryland, University of Maryland, John Hopkins University, Embry-Riddle, University of Baltimore....many more all represented here near Lexington Park - both for undergraduate & graduate education.
Public transportation is basically non-existent. Small county-run bus line does provide some transportation (better than it used to be). Bring your car/van/truck with you. Nearest major airports are Ronald Reagan National in DC and Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) south of Baltimore (about 90 minutes from here).
Weather - hot/humid summers, fair winters (occasional snow).
Everyone....did I cover everything????
