The Maryland General Assembly passed a new car seat law to go into effect June 30, 2008.

Children must be in a safety seat (car seat or booster seat, according to manufacturer's instructions) until they turn 8 years old or are 65 lbs or are 4'9" tall.

It appears the MD GenASS is in cahoots with the car seat manufacturers.

An 8 year old in a car seat! You all have fun with that.

I just checked #2 son (7) over the weekend to see if we could do away with his booster. Nope. Knees are not at the front edge of the seat yet.

They included height and weight requirements in there, not just age. My daughter did away with her booster when her head was above the back of it.

#1 son stayed in a booster seat until he was over 8. He's 9-1/2 now and MIGHT be 65 lbs and about 4'8" but he can sit on the seat in the minivan with his back against the back, his knees at the edge of the seat and his feet on the floor. (In the little car, he's been able to sit that way since he was 7)

We have backless boosters.

If you have ever seen the damage a seatbelt can do to a child's face because they are too small to be sitting without a simple booster you would keep your kids in one according to the law too.

My daughter was in one until she was 8, my boys are almost 7 and 5 years old and sit in a backless booster everytime they go down the road. It's the rule and if your kids know your rules are to be kept they won't have a problem with it.

Stay away from the "shield" type boosters what ever you do. There have been instances of kids sliding out from under those during a collision. Other backless boosters are ok so long as your kid's head is still below the seatback. My daughter's high back booster protected her neck when we had some igeet slam into the back of us by Fastop.

I believe those were all recalled about 5 years ago. We have one, but the shield is removable and we never used the shield, because it never made sense to me (and I was right). BTW, the "fix" for our shield type booster was to take the shield off and not use it.

Which brings up the issue of buying used car seats... not the best move. Need to check them out carefully to make sure they have no weak spots from being in an accident (and you can't always tell) and check them agains recall lists to make sure they were never recalled.

Thank you for posting this. I'm going to be babysitting my niece and nephew for the whole summer (school age kids), and I will need to find out thier height and weight before purchasing booster seats.

lets just keep them a booster seat till they're 5'-9" and 17 yrs old.

Driving is apparently so dangerous that we should ban it altogether.
Oh for pity's sake

Yes, some safety laws are ridiculous, but some aren't. They've been trying to make this law for 8 years old since the first car seat law was introduced. But parent's whined and cried and worried about how their little darlings were used to being "big" kids and wouldn't want to go back to the car seat.

The fact is, without the law, many people wouldn't bother, because they wouldn't realize it's not safe. And even still, parents want to take short cuts for their own convenience. And then they use the excuse, "when we were young, we never had car seats and we survived" But what about those who didn't because the technology didn't exist?

My great-great grandparents had 9 children and back in the day, no one thought anything of leaving a 2-yo child sitting up on a fence, until one of them went splat...but the other 8 survived, so there couldn't really be anything wrong with it.

Do you have a link to this law? The SHA website, state legislature list of 2008 laws, and maryland.gov don't mention it anywhere.
