Check the specs (screen size, memory, hard drive size, processor type and speed) and compare it to what's on sale from TigerDirect and NewEgg
Brand is somewhat immaterial with computers since they're all assembled from parts made by the same people.
i.e. you can get a HP with either an AMD or Intel processor.

From a processor aspect alone, I have been advised that an i3 or i5 would be sufficient for net surfing and that type of thing. I'm just waiting for Wednesday to get here, so I can go to BJ's to see what they have.

I went last week and filled out one of those pick up slips; that has all the what's and wherefore's; so, I know what I'm after; I just have to look at that friggin' slip to be able to say what, exactly.

The computer acquisition Gods are smiling on me right now.
Just saw another sale paper from TARGET or Wal*Mart.
Whichever one this sale paper belongs to, is having a laptop sale; and it starts tomorrow.
So, I guess I will be able to get a laptop.....finally.

It was BJ's.

My 'balloon' didn't get popped yesterday; it just got a small hole punched into it. How's that for beating up a metaphor?
I went to the bank yesterday; took out the money to get my new laptop, only to realize that what I hope is really a sale at BJ's doesn't start til Thursday. Of course, I could be wrong still; because I don't have anything to reference.
So, I don't know if this suppoed sale begins today or tomorrow.
Hopefully, by some time this weekend I'll really have a new "toy."

You apparently have internet access now. Why don't you go online and see what those store have to offer?

let your fingers do the walking

Don't forget sales tax

a $400 computer costs $24 less on line than from a local store

My math REALLY sux. Is there a general percentage "discount" for ordering, say, a laptop online vice in-store? And wouldn't a "discount" be offset by shipping costs?

I went to BJ's last week and found something I could use; within my "price range" and everything.
I filled out one of those "pick-up" slips that I can't put my hands on right now; so, I do know which one I'm gonna get; I just couldn't tell ya which one right now, cuz I don't 'member the spec's.

Maryland has a 6% sales tax. If the people you're ordering from don't have a physical presence in the state, you don't pay the sales tax.

A lot of companies off free shipping on orders over a certain amount, usually $100

Got a laptop for my dad from Tiger Direct last week. No shipping, no tax, paid $8 extra to get it here in 2 days.

MY problem with ordering online or otherwise is, I don't have "plastic." If I can't pay cash for something; I don't "need" it; but I want this laptop.
Not that being "plastic-free" is a problem. I could just ask Dad to put it on his plastic and pay him back before the bill comes.
That said, I found something I can use, at BJ's.
I gave Dad the cash to pick one up; like I said before; so I'll just wait-n-see.

In this day and age, not having "plastic" is a problem

If your credit sucks, you can get pre-paid cards

Not according to my latest credit report; but if I can continue to get by without a credit card, I'll be okay.

Why would you want to?

Life's a lot easier without having to carry cash or mail checks to pay bills.
Why stand in line twice to buy a tank of gas when you can swipe a card?

Go to your bank and get a Visa check card  Works just like a credit card, but the money comes directly out of your bank account. If your at CPFCU, it's free to get/use.

Since you mentioned 'swipe a card'; I thought about getting a debit card; but the problem with that is, remembering to put debit's in my checkbook. With MY lousy memory, I have a hard enough time keeping up with my checkbook.

That's why you do it online. Visit the website and see your debit transactions moments after you made them.

I jam the reciepts in my wallet and only take them out when I write them in the check book.

FYI - debit cards are not recommended for internet use because they don't have the same safe guards as a credit card

I know that part.

Not that this is a contest; but I do the same thing with ATM receipts and check carbons; "stuff 'em".
It just makes me backtrack to see if I remembered to put all the checks and withdrawals in the check register.

In case you couldn't tell, I even suck at simple bookkeeping; unlike one person I know; I'll call her "Mom."
Her checkbook has balanced to the penny for; coming up on 46 years; Dad told me.

I actually prefer to keep track of bank stuff online. I don't get pay stubs or monthly bank statements in the mail anymore.
