New York Lawmakers Want Rest Stop Chick-Fil-A Locations Open On Sundays

A spokesperson for the Thruway Authority told the outlet that a 24/7 food option contractually must provide service for travelers at the rest stops, which are managed by Applegreen travel plazas.

“As part of the new 33-year contract to manage these facilities, Applegreen is required to have at least one hot and cold food option available 24 hours a day at all locations,” the state spokesperson said. “Chick-fil-A’s Sunday closure is a brand requirement which Applegreen factored into their tenant plan.”

Manhattan Democratic Assemblymember Tony Simone said in a statement that “not only does Chick-Fil-A have a long shameful history of opposing LGBTQ rights, it simply makes no sense for them to be a provider of food services in busy travel plazas,” Simone stated.

“If one of the main food options closes for just one day, it not only inconveniences travelers but also puts a significant strain on the food spots that are open, leading to longer wait times,” another Democratic lawmaker, New York state Sen.Michelle Hinchey, said.

New York Democrat’s Bill Could Force Chick-Fil-A To Open On Sundays

Assemblyman Tony Simone, who is openly complaining that Chick-fil-A has a “terrible record on LGBT rights,” penned Bill A08336 to mandate that the New York State Thruway Authority only continue or enter into contracts with businesses that will stay open all seven days of the week.

“Chick-fil-A has had a terrible record on LGBT rights,” Simone complained to the New York Post last week. “I’m not going to not say that clearly.”

“To serve New Yorkers and travelers, things should be open seven days a week, including Chick-fil-A, and if they can’t they shouldn’t be in our rest stops,” he continued. “There should be options for people to eat and drink and not just one spot.”

Notably, there is already a standard that at least one hot-food option is open and available at these rest stops on every day of the week to better accommodate travelers and truckers. If Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays at a given rest stop, for example, there is another restaurant open.

“Our requirement is that we have at least one hot food option available,” Thruway spokesperson Jennifer Givner explained, according to Business Insider. “If Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays we have other alternatives for our customers.”

This seems really simple. If it's a public area that is used on Sunday, and they need to have food available, then put that requirement in the contract and don't pick a company that closes on Sunday to service the area.

They are attempting to change the requirements through law instead of the normal process. To be fair, sometimes requirements change. People do need to eat on Sundays, so maybe they have determined this to be a bigger issue than they originally thought. But a law isn't the right way to go about it, the right way is to exercise whichever lease-cancel clause exists in the contract (which probably requires them to pay the owners of the restaurant a lot of money) and put out a new contract that stipulates the food vendor must normally operate on all days.

When NY agreed to the contract with CFA they know they are not open on Sunday but agreed anyway. Once there lawmakers mention CFA and the alphabet people you know who's complaining. I also saw mentioned this is for new restaurants.

One lawmaker Made a comment about their LGBT record, and another they quoted made a comment about services being overwhelmed on Sundays. You chose to focus on one probably because the author of the story wanted that to be the focus. Doesn't mean there isn't a legitimate reason as well. And as I already mentioned I agree changing law for one company is dumb. But if they want to cancel the lease in favor of a company that stays open on Sundays they almost certainly can, it will just cost money. They are trying to get around paying that cost.

It's not like lefties all of a sudden dislike Ckic-fil-a, that's been a thing for at least a decade. And if they were trying "to get the Christian chicken people" don't you think they would go for something a little more far reaching than making one or two of their thousands of restaurants stay open on Sunday?

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. It's much easier to believe they miscalculated the amount of service that needed to be provided on Sundays than to believe that the state is out to get this company (but only in a very minor way that will actually bring them extra revenue).

Indeed, I will point out NY knew the situation when granting the contract to CFA ... closed Sundays is NO Secret.

IMHO this all boils down to attacking a business that does not toe the progressive line

New York Democrats urge ban of Chick-fil-A from state rest stops

July 13, 2021

At least three New York Democrats signed a letter voicing opposition over plans to open Chick-fil-A restaurants at rest stops throughout the state, claiming the quick-service chain has donated to discriminatory and anti-LGBT groups in the past.

The Thruway Authority responded to the three Democrats in a separate letter on July 11, underscoring its Board of Directors and staff "supports an inclusive environment" that treats travelers through its system "with dignity and respect."

"Our private partner in the Service Area redevelopment project, Empire State Thruway Partners, explored a selection of restaurants and finalized agreements with specific brands to operate at the redeveloped service areas to enhance and improve the travel experience for our customers," the Thruway Authority wrote in a statement obtained by the Washington Examiner.

The letter went on to explain that "there are no state taxpayer dollars or toll payer funds" going toward the thruway's redevelopment efforts. The Thruway Authority added that every brand included in the development project "is legally required ... to adhere to the inclusive and non-discriminatory standards that New York State embraces."

While the bill, if passed, would apply to all restaurants, Chick-fil-A is mentioned by name in some written legislative materials explaining the justification for the proposed law.

State Assemblymember Tony Simone, the Democrat who introduced the bill, said it is meant to give travelers in New York a variety of food options, including healthy foods, at rest stops, rather than an effort to eventually push Chick-fil-A out.

“Look, if you want to eat fried chicken while traveling over the holidays, then Chick-fil-A should be open on Sundays,” Simone said.

The bill wouldn’t immediately apply to restaurants currently operating — meaning the impact on existing Chick-fil-A locations would be limited — but would affect all future contracts for food concessions at transportation facilities owned by the state and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. It would exclude temporary concessions, like farmer’s markets.

Graham declares ‘war’ against NY to protect Chick-fil-A’s Sundays off

He continued in a second post, threatening to introduce legislation that would withhold federal funds from cities that require the fast food chain to stay open on Sundays.

“The founders of Chick-fil-A made a decision early on to close on Sunday, consistent with their faith,” the South Carolina senator said. “For any government to try to reverse this decision flies in the face of who we are as Americans.”

“Chick-fil-A is a great company with thousands of locations serving the public with a quality product and taking care of their employees,” he added. “New York is off base and their actions will not go unanswered.”

The aforementioned New York bill aims to have restaurants in state highway system rest areas operate for the entirety of the week, according to The Associated Press.

The state awarded spots to the popular fast food outlet to open counter outlets at some of the rest stops on the New York Thruway, knowing full well ahead of time that the counters would be closed on Sundays in accordance with the eatery's policy. The policy has been in place since its founding in Hapeville, Georgia, in 1946, according to New York's Spectrum News 1.

Chick-fil-A's policy states that the company is closed on Sundays "to allow Operators and their team members to enjoy a day of rest, be with their families and loved ones, and worship if they choose."

Chick-fil-A was awarded 10 locations as part of a remodeling of the Thruway’s 27 rest stops, some of which have been closed for more than a year, Spectrum News 1 reported.

But left-wing activists in New York have agitated against the award of the locations because Chick-fil-A -- which is run by a Christian family -- has supported what the left claims are "anti-LGBT" organizations.

The Thruway Authority notes that it took Chick-fil-A's Sunday policy into account when making plans for the renovations, Spectrum News 1 reported.

A spokesperson told the station that "as part of the new 33-year contract to manage these facilities, Applegreen is required to have at least one hot and cold food option available 24 hours a day at all locations. Chick-fil-A’s Sunday closure is a brand requirement which Applegreen factored into their tenant plan."

"When the project is complete, Chick-fil-A will operate in less than half of the service areas on the Thruway – all of which have at least one other food concept and a convenience store open seven days a week with up to three additional concepts and a convenience store at the largest and highest volume locations," the authority explained.

The plans made by the authority, though, were not good enough for left-wing New York Democrats who are more interested in attacking Chick-fil-A for its religious beliefs.

The legislature is debating the bill (A08336) to require all food providers that operate at "transportation facilities and rest areas" operated by the state to be open seven days a week.

In a statement reported by Spectrum News 1, Democratic Assemblymember Tony Simone of Manhattan unsurprisingly focused on Chick-fil-A's charitable donations and support for Christian organizations as the impetus for his actions and put much less focus on the supposed "problem" of closing on Sunday, making it clear that he was attempting to penalize the fast food giant for its religion-based policies.

It seems likely that this broadside against Chick-fil-A will pass since the state legislature and governor's office are dominated by anti-religious Democrats.

The goal is to force Chick-fil-A to break the biblical commandment to honor the Lord's Day.

While its number in the Commandments might differ, and the wording might change, depending on the denomination and translation of the Bible, the gist of it, from the English Standard Version, is universal: "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work..."

The Democrats' move in New York is nothing more than a direct attack on Chick-fil-A because it bases some of its practices and policies on its owners' Christian beliefs.

Small New York Town Devastated as Gun Plant Shuts Down

Publicly, the company attributed the plant closure in part to a hostile political climate in Albany regarding firearms production.

"I am writing to inform you that RemArms LLC has decided to close its entire operation at 14 Hoefler Avenue, NY 13357," Remington Arms said in a letter to employees. "The company expects that operations at the Ilion facility will conclude on or about March 4, 2024."

The Georgia-based company said it would continue to make firearms at its facility in Huntsville, Alabama, which opened in 2014, a year after New York's passage of the Safe Act, which created stricter gun laws.

The anti-gun political climate in Democrat-controlled Massachusetts prompted competitor Smith & Wesson to move from its longtime base in Springfield to Maryville, Tennessee. The company announced the opening of its new headquarters there in October.

In Ilion, the community reaction to the Remington plant closure has been a sense of loss and bewilderment, Mr. Stephens said.

Many are wondering what will become of the 10,000-square-foot plant and the village's Remington identity.

Sometime in the near future, the south will have all the technology and weapon manufacturing.

A reversal of the situation from the civil war.

You would be wrong. See post #324.
BTW...THIS was the point...They already calculated that in. They have a hot food restaurant open on Sundays at the rest stops.

That was a shitshow 20 years ago when I attended it (figuratively, and literally given the estimated 2 million people and almost no restrooms/porta potties) and I assume it's only gotten worse.
