The "Black Community" does not need a spokesperson. To assume that one is needed is to assume that all Black folks agree on every issue or that there is some secret ballot held the results of which are then used to inform the appointed spokesperson of the "Black Community's" position on the issue at hand. We are not some single-minded, single issue people. We are Americans just like the majority and seek the same rights and protections as any other American. On those issues there is not a "Black Community" but an "American Community."
This is why I used the word IF... IF they feel they NEED a spokesman..

Although you may not agree, Jesse and Al and even Minister Farrakkan as well as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Vernon Johns and many others, have served to bring issues to the forefront that are not of obvious concern to the majority of Americans. For that they should be appreciated. The fact that both Al and Jesse have "stepped in it" from time to time should be chalked up to their being human. We have all paid the price for their human failings, be that price be some folks immediate disdain when they speak out or other folks using their presence to further their immediate goals (Michael Richards). If both Rev. Al and Jesse Jackson had kept their reputations intact, they would both be viewed by more Americans as true Patriots who simply want this country to live up to the ideals expressed within the Constitution.
So tell me, what is it EXACTLY that Jesse Jackson does for work?? Where does his income come from?? Has he EVER had a job and a steady income, a career, a profession? What about Al Sharpton? What does he do for work?

Ha. Beat you to it

But I disagree with your second paragraph and especially with this:

If you look at the incidences that Sharpton and Jackson choose to get involved with, you'll notice a pattern. And I think they exacerbate the problem more than they've helped. And, last but certainly not least, I do not think that MLK belongs lumped together with the likes of Jackson, Sharpton and especially Farrakhan. I think it's insulting to him and his accomplishments.

Not entirely, I may have to get into later but remember Lt. Goodman, the Naval Aviator shot down over Libya? Jesse was highly effective in negotiating his release (may have been used by the Libyans, but at least Goodman was released). There are other, more and less publicized instances where Jesse has done good things. I know, I know, show me...will do later.

I thought long and hard about including Dr. King in that list but decided that it makes the point that no single person speaks for all Black people. You have understand the context of the "Black Experience" in this country to understand how each has contributed positively. I really had to stretch to include Farrakan because I believe he was instrumental in the death of Malcom X....again, another story for later.

I honestly feel that you've done King an injustice by including his name with the others......

Extortion.
Steve Miller of The Washington Times pored over the 2000 tax records of Jackson's political groups and found "his top donors that year were a who's who of companies that had been threatened with boycotts or other sanctions by Mr. Jackson." It may not be news to political junkies that Jackson's empire is built by threatening corporations with hostile media exposure. But let it be said: A supportive liberal media elite not only makes Jackson's threats credible, they are so supportive of this man that no one will touch Miller's keg-of-dynamite report. So much for objectivity. If that story were not enough, Miller also revealed that Rev. Jackson, the scourge of the law-breakers at Enron, took $50,000 from Kevin Ingram, a friend who pleaded guilty to federal money-laundering charges related to Pakistani arms deals. He is in federal prison. No news there for Bryant Gumbel, apparently. Another investigative reporter on Jackson's trail is author Ken Timmerman, whose book -- appropriately titled "Shakedown" -- has graced the New York Times best-seller list for six weeks.

You're on to something..

And I'll tell you something else:

When Big Al was running for the Democrat primary, his debate opponents had a primo topic to snag him with. But none of them went there - they let him get off his zingers and be the clown without mention of some of his more colorful escapades.

That told me something about the 2004 crop of Dem candidates, that they would stand there on a stage with Al Sharpton as their political equal.

And lookee way down there just above Former Potential Candidates (in case the wind is blowing out of the North that day)

How not to get shot by a NYC Cop!!

1. DON'T choose to have your bachelor party at a skanky strip-club in Queens.
2. DON'T have your buddies pick a fight with Mr. Heavy who is already packing heat.
3. DON'T force the local streetwalker to choose how many of you and your homies she will have "to do", thus causing part of the ruckus.
4. DON'T decide to have your buddies get your gun out of your car.
5. DON'T ignore police officer's direct instructions.
6. DON'T ram your car into the officer's leg, and try to kill him - thus making your car a deadly weapon.
7. DON'T try to run over the officer a second time - thus again making your car a deadly weapon.
8. DON'T try to drive away recklessly when MORE police officers show up.
9. DON'T let your buddy hop out of the car - with your gun.
10. DON'T SPEND THE NIGHT BEFORE YOUR WEDDING TRYING TO BED A PROSTITUTE FROM A SKANKY STRIP CLUB IN QUEENS!!!!!!

You take the fun out of life!

What a story to tell god when he gets to those pearly gates!

God: How did you die?
Him: Well I got drunk on my wedding day, went to a skanky stripper club where I picked up a hooker and was on my way back to the motel to screw her when I ran into a cop car. They started shooting at me, so I tried to run them over....and well I missed.

God: :smack:

Some might. Try to understand the context. I love talking about how Malcolm and Martin have impacted my life. Maybe we can have that conversation one day. As far as Jesse and the others.....again, as I said before, we'll need some time and you probably would still disagree.

p.s.: Vernon Johns belongs with Martin. He was the Pastor of the Dextor Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery before Martin Luther King. He was truly something special. Look him up if you get the chance.

That would be an interesting conversation - the civil rights era is as remote to me as the Revolutionary War.

But I think you will agree that MLK was more about equality than championing some guy who gets drunk and tries to run over a cop.

All this probably happened because the drunks probably thought they were dealing with unarmed law abiding citizens.. Can you imagine the looks on their faces when they hit the unsuspecting cop and were then looking down the barrels of SEVEN handguns..

"an armed society, is a polite society" -Robert A. Heinlein

That is the bueaty of an armed society, in general it is polite one. And I am sure people will miscontrued this but just think if we all lived under the assumption that everyone else is armed, and really that is all it needs to be is the assumption.
