I see your point, but I am not going to sit on a pedestal just because I have the knowledge and tools to start a non-franchise biz. These people are entrepreneurs and local folks that take a leap just like you and I. When they fail, they don't have "big brother" helping them out. They just flat out fail.
No, because big brother helps them immensely with global advertising and marketing, not to mention proven layout and sales techniques. You have to really work hard to screw up a franchise. Or not work hard, as the case may be.
Like I said, I am not anti-chain nor am I anti-big box - I am simply pro-small business. When I have the choice, I typically like to give my money to local people and not some huge corporate chain. Couldn't care less what you do with your money.
