Pitbulls for rehoming

Just admit you have an irrational fear of these dogs because of what you see in the news.....or go google some more pitbull mauling stories...oh, and add a few smilies to it for the awe factor.....because we all know, no other big dog is capable of killing, only pits. :coffee:

You've already ended the educational part of this debate;

The Pit Bull breed makes up 5-9.6% of the United States dog population. In 2007, there were above 72 million dogs in the United States provided by American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. That’s between 3,600,000 and 6,912,000 Pit Bull breed dogs in the United States.

So, for our example we’ll take the average percent between 5 and 9.6, and use 7.3 percent, which would give an average estimation of the Pit Bull population in the United States. That leaves us with 5,256,000 Pit Bulls.

Other dog populations (United States):

(estimation) Pit Bulls: 5,256,000

(estimation) Rottweilers: 900,000

(estimation) German Shepherds: 780,000

(estimation) Chows: 240,000

Fatal attacks by these breeds of dogs (1979-1998):

Pit Bulls: 66

Rottweilers: 39

German Shepherds: 17

Chows: 8

When we divide the population by the fatal attacks, we can get a percentage based on the dogs probability of fatally attacking a human.

Pit Bulls: .00125 %

Rottweilers: .00433 %

German Shepherds: .00217%

Chow: .00333%

The pit phobes are having no more of your 'statistics' and facts than Feinstein, Piers Morgan or The Obama are about guns.

Wait. Did anyone say they like Rotties and Chows fine, just pitbulls suck?

I hate Chows more than any other breed. Mean bastards. I'll be around a friend's pit, but NOT their freaking Chow. Their persistent bad hair day makes them moody.

See? Yet another reason why dogs are not like people. If they were, you'd hang around with friends who had a chow and you'd engage them in conversation;

"So, Chow, if I may call you Chow, can I be mean to you for a second? Good, so, here's the thing, why do you Chow's suck? I mean, I don't mean you personally because I just met you and you seem nice enough but, can we all agree that, in general, Chow's don't know how to behave? Seriously, y'all are worse than pit bulls. And your breathe, let me tell you girlfriend, whoooooo. That's just not how we do, OK? So, here's some spritz and, that doo, that's just not working for you. How abut a cute little thing like..."

Ha.

Of the statistics cited, I'd be curious how many of the Rottie and Shepherd attacks were intentional. As in, prowler comes on your property, Fido does his job.

The fact is that Rotties and Shepherds ARE security dogs; Pits are typically not. Or at least not that I've ever heard of.

Wow, you found two stories that didn't involve Pits. Oh wait, "Pit types".

I see that your tunnel vision has kicked in.

Nobody said that dogs are like people; just that they are more like people than they are like a gun.

It would benefit your human development if you would learn to simply admit when you're wrong, rather than do backflips trying to "prove" your erroneous assertions.

Pit and Rottie. I've said these two dogs are responsible for the majority of deaths and maulings. And you own post proves thsi with Pits having almost TWICE the incidents as Rotties.

My case was won and done before this thread ever started. :diva:

Sorry, that is not what pits are known for.

Not anymore, but they were. Some pretty old pictures in there.

FOR OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS AMERICANS KNEW PIT BULLS FOR WHAT THEY DID BEST. BABYSITTING. Part I. | Yonah Ward Grossman

Astoundingly, for most of our history America’s nickname for Pit Bulls was “The Nanny Dog”. For generations if you had children and wanted to keep them safe you wanted a pit bull, the dog that was the most reliable of any breed with children or adults.
The Nanny Dog is now vilified by a media that always wants a demon dog breed to frighten people and LHASA-APSO BITES MAN just doesn’t sell papers. Before pit bulls it was Rottweilers, before Rottweilers it was Dobermans, and before them German Shepherds. Each breed in it’s order were deemed too vicious and unpredictable to be around people. Each time people wanted laws to ban them. It is breathtakingly ironic that the spotlight has turned on the breed once the symbol of our country and our national babysitter.
In temperance tests (the equivalent of how many times your kid can poke your dog in the eye before it bites him) of all breeds the most tolerant was the Golden Retriever. The second most tolerant was the pit bull.
Pit Bull’s jaws do not lock, they do not have the most powerful bite among dogs (Rottweilers have that honor) they are not naturally human aggressive (in fact pit bull puppies prefer human company to their mother’s two weeks before all other dogs), and they feel as much pain as any other breed (accidentally step on one’s toe and you’ll see).
The most tolerant, patient, gentle breed of dogs is now embarrassingly portrayed as the most dangerous. It would be funny if the new reputation did not mean 6,000 are put to death every day, by far the highest number of any other breed euthanized.
That’s a lot of babysitters.
(Pictured: As you’ll see, from the richest to the poorest and everything in between, in America the pit bull was the dog for kids. Don’t miss the little boy in the goat cart at the end. He’s priceless.)

Really?

Maybe it's because of the sheer number of pitbulls?

Don't let simple math get in the way.

Yes, Senator Feinstein. My bad. What was I thinking questioning your opinion?

As usual, the thread becomes an 'us against them', so I'd just like to add:

I don't care for most dogs, regardless of breed. There are some dogs I'm comfortable around, but they are few and far between. There are a few breeds that I don't trust, and keep a constant eye on them when I'm in their presence, which will always be a very short period of time.

I can count on one hand how many dogs I've been comfortable enough with, in the last 20 years, to spend any amount of time with. They are:

a wiry terrier type mutt
a greyhound
a golden, and a lab.

As a rule, I don't trust dogs. That said, if I were attacked by one, the last one I would want it to be is a pit type dog.

 Ummmm..... look at the facts and get back to me pal. You and Chris posted them. Oh, open your eyes this time. :yay:
.

Times up;

Pits 5,000,000
Kills 66

Rate 1 kill per 75,000 dogs

Rottie 900,000
kills 39

Rate; 1 kill per 23,000 dogs

So, if there were 1,000,000 pits, you could expect 13 kills
If we have 1,000,000 Rotties, you could expect 43

Spin as you see fit.
