Pitbulls for rehoming

Larry Gude

Strung Out
As a rule, I don't trust dogs. That said, if I were attacked by one, the last one I would want it to be is a pit type dog.

Could not agree more.

I have said numerous times in this thread I would not object to more stringent rules on Pit ownership simply based on the incredible damage one can do when they DO attack.

The only thing that would make me feel good about pit type dogs, is if their owners would lock them in a gun safe.

Curious....

How many have you been around?

How so?

Considering there are other breeds who have a higher bite pressure than pits, and are larger than pits, why only pits?

If we are basing (hypothetically) legislation based on what a dog COULD do, why not add all large dogs. Technically, they COULD cause huge damage also.

they are not the only dogs that do an incredible amount of damage when they do "attack".....

:coffee: guess no one has ever seen an "oops" during a police K9 session, ... those dogs do not discriminate.

and those dogs do NOT/should not bite over and over... they are "TRAINED" to bite and hold.... yes they will shake... and they will eff your day and life up.

Determining Which Dog Breed Has the Strongest Jaw
National Geographic did several tests of bite force with numerous animals, including dogs and wolves, to see which had the strongest jaws and the worst bite. Not surprisingly, the wolf was the canine with the most powerful bite, measuring 406 pounds of pressure. A wolf can, when it is protecting itself, inflict a bite that carries up to 1,200 pounds of pressure.

The top five domesticated breeds thought to have the strongest jaw are all large dogs known for their bite. They are generally the same breeds attributed with the highest rate of attacks on people, and they are often listed as dangerous dogs.

Pit Bull
The Pitbull has become a breed synonymous with strong jaws, biting and danger. While this dog does not have the highest bite force of the dogs National Geographic tested, it is one of the top four. The Pitbull bite was measured at 235 pounds of pressure. It is the most highly recognized breed for jaw and bite strength.

German Shepherd
Although the German Shepherd was originally bred as a herding dog, it has been used as a guard and police dog with good reason. This is a powerful and intelligent breed. The German Shepherd's bite measured 238 bite force, just slightly above the Pitbull.

Rottweiler
The Rottweiler, or Rottie as it is often called, has a huge head and large jaws. This breed bit with 328 pounds of pressure. The Rottweiler is considered the second most dangerous breed of dog; the Pitbull is number one.

Doberman
The Doberman is a highly energetic dog that can be very aggressive. The bite force is reputed to be 600 pounds of pressure; however that seems to be largely unsubstantiated.

Mastiff
Many breeders say that the Mastiff has the strongest jaw. Reportedly, the Mastiff has a bite force of 552 pounds. If true, this would make it stronger than any other domesticated dog on record.

the Labrador, bites with 125 pounds of force

Humans surprisingly beat out the pet dog, and measured in at 170 pounds of force.

and yet.... there have been Labs that have killed :coffee:

I've been around a few, I've called the cops on a few, and I've had a few friends who put them down, all the while saying "s/he was never aggressive before".

I have personally never seen any other breed of dog, consistently do as much damage to a person, as a pit type.

They COULD, but they don't.

I'll also add, that I don't care for the statistics, or the bite pressure, or the 'oops' of the police dogs.

I care about what I have personally experienced.

Fair enough.

I've personally seen more Chihuahuas, yorkies, pms, and other small dogs be consistantly agressive.

But that's ok because they are small?

No, you care about stats when they help your case.

If you were debating another subject to someone else, you'd use as many stats as you could to make your point.

If that person said "I don't care about stats", you'd call them full of sh!t, and any further discussion on the matter would be null and void because that person isn't willing to accept anythign outside of their world.

You know what? My dogs bite. And they attack.

Granted, they're only about 7lbs each but I don't want them hurting anyone or getting taken away from me or getting shot by the cops so I do not let them into any situation where that might happen.

Having said that, I absolutely understand that accidents happen so I think it's really important for owners to fully understand the risks they are taking when they select a pet. It's important for them to understand the consequences if something happens.

If you have a dog, it might bite or get loose. If you have a big dog, it'll hurt someone when it bites or get shot by the cops if it gets loose. Because of that, many breeds are not accepted by landlords or in certain counties so you may not be able to take them with you if you need to relocate. And you are the only person responsible for that if it occurs. Plan accordingly. Think it through.

The Pit Bull debate is very emotionally charged. The data can be presented to support both sides of the debate and it can serve to successfully confuse others. Because of that, it'll never go away. And neither will Pit Bulls. Instead of arguing about it, we should be coming up with a better way to negotiate this so fewer people get hurt.

Please show me where I have ever posted stats. Please.

I'm not trying to change your mind, I'm just expressing my point of view.
I could really give a rats ass if your dog eats you, as long as I never have to deal with your dog.

Seriously? You're going to compare any one of those dogs to a pit? That's ####ing laughable. I could crush the skull of one of those little rats just by stepping on it. Good grief. Really?

And this is why after a while I just give up. They start posting the silliest $hit ever like bite pressures etc. and to continue with them is ridiculous.

Yet Larry calls me Piers and claims victory. If Frederick wasn't so far, I'd drive up there and kick him in the shin.

I'll pitch in some gas money. But seriously, Larry's only interest is the argument itself, not what the argument is about.
