So. The man says the blueberries are either 6 or 12 and after I lose my bid battle, the winner takes only 6. The balance is offered to me and I say I will take the rest.

Turns out there were 42!!!!! left - NOT 6. Holy friggin blueberry overload!! It is certainly a good thing Loper, her sister and friend were with me. Whew. I will be cooking BG's blueberry bread for sure.

That was a lot of fun!! There were way more people this time than when I went last and many things went for more than I thought they would. Yet, we did end up with some good deals. :buddies:

It was great meeting you inkah! Even with the blueberry fiasco. :buddies:

ok so this was our take for the day.. inkah, myself, my sister, and another friend. :) in one of the boxes you can't see in were bunches of mixed hot peppers and jalapenos..

I am doing this with some of the blueberries tonight
4 cups frozen, thawed or fresh blueberries
1 quart red wine vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
Lime peel cut in strips from 1 lime (green part only)
1 (3-inch) cinnamon stick

Directions:
In a large non-reactive saucepan, crush blueberries with a potato masher or back of a heavy spoon. Add vinegar, sugar, lime and cinnamon and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 20 minutes. Cool slightly and pour into a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate for 2 days to allow flavors to blend.

Place a wire mesh strainer over a large bowl. In batches, ladle blueberry mixture into strainer, pressing out as much liquid as possible. Discard solids.

I am heating back up the strained liquid pouring into jars and water bath for 10 minutes to can.

or you can do it this way,
Pour vinegar into clean glass bottles or jars, and refrigerate, tightly covered, indefinitely. Use in salad dressings or drizzled over chicken or beef.

inkah, not sure if you split up some of those pints of mixed hot peppers that we got, if you did.. Good god test the hotness because some of them are effing burning hot! while doing salsa, I put everything in a bowl. The jalapenos, the yellow banana peppers, skinned maters, garlic, and one or two of those "mixed hot peppers" to make salsa. OMG, I only scooped my hand in to drain the veggies and put into a pan, no cuts or wounds on my hand, MY HAND IS EFFIN BURNING! I don't know which pepper it was in that mixed bunch, but whoa I have never had that reaction. Not even with the dried Ghost peppers that I have. MY HAND IS BURNING!!!! MY Nose is running but I don't dare touch it with my hand.

It was in those mixed pint's of small hot peppers.

Yowza! Thanks for the warning! I am a wuss when it comes to heat - I wear gloves just for jalapenos! :D. I made salsa but thankfully didn't use any of those teeny peppers yet. I was thinking about just drying those little suckers. Hope your hand feels better soon!

Got all my potatoes canned. Canned a few tomatoes too. Some were the cherry tomatoes, but most were from my own garden. I am at a loss as to what to do with all those purple and yellow bell peppers...

Chop, and freeze them.

I have been so sick all weekend. :bawl: I am so sad that I missed this. :bawl: We went to Bob Evans on Friday and I got car sick when we got to Leonardtown. I am forcing my husband to take me again on Friday. :coffee: He thinks it is a joke. I am not joking.

I hope you feel better WR!!

Although, I figured most of the forum peeps would punk out.. no one came but inkah and I from the forums.. (that we know of) :)

So far, I have canned 5 pints, 12 half pints of salsa, 6 pints of pickled jalapenos, carrot, onion, and garlic, 2 quarts of cherry tomatoes, and now drying the dreaded mixed hot peppers..

Yay, you canned stuff!! :buddies: Target has a book at one of the end caps in the kitchen section that is only 7 bucks. I highly recommend anyone new to canning to pick it up! It has some great recipes for starters and also has things for freezing and perserving food in general.

It really does make a HUGE difference to go with a group of people unless you have some hardcore freezing, canning and baking plans...

The "small" lots aren't always better prices than stores and the bigger lots are HUGE for a single family your size (I think you have two tiny kiddos??).

Sorry you had to miss it :(

Sis and I went again Friday and got some amazing deals on maters. 1/2 bushel boxes of canning maters for 2 bucks. (one or 2 out of the boxes may have had brusies) Great maters. Prime perfect maters for 2.50 a box. Okra, blackberries, yellow squash, zucchini, bunch of jalapenos... edemay(sp?) potted plants.. bunch of other stuff. Yet, I think we may be on the cusp of a bean apocalypse... freaking green beans and lima beans were going for 30-35 bucks a 1/2 bushel box.
