Putting a dog to sleep when you have other dogs.

Has anyone with multiple dogs ever had to put one dog down? Did you do it at home or bring the other dogs to visit the body after?

The other dogs will definatly mourn the loss of their playmate or pal. If you do it at home which I recommend, Im not really sure the others will understand what is happening. I had the vet come to my house and I dont remember my other dog doing anything to make me worry. sorry for your impending loss, it is very hard but at home I feel they will be at peace in your arms when they pass. Good luck with your decision.

Sorry to hear this

it was done at the vets, without the other dogs around.
You're sensitive to the effects on the other dogs-good.
Suggest you just be with them, comfort them in their confusion.

They grieve too.

I have had to many times... Brought the dog to the vet and buried at home. The other dogs already knew that something was wrong with the one's that were sick. Yet, I have always had more than 2 when this had to be done so there was always another dog to grieve with.

We had two dogs..
We lost our Lab, Sara last year to throat cancer.

One morning she completely stopped eating which was 180 out of the norm. I called the vet that day and we had her put to sleep that evening. Because we had her cremated, she is still with us today.

We did not take Cody, our shepherd/collie mix.

I think he knew before we even left. When we came home without her, he came over and laid his head in my lap like he was trying to comfort me. He looked for her for a few days, but seemed to get back into his normal routine over the next few weeks. Now he's loving life unless he gets in trouble for something!

We had 2 yorkies once . Lost 1 Yorkie to Heart Failure . The other Yorkie "looked" around for several days for his companion but had no issues that needed addressing .

Sorry for your loss , you and your spouse will need the comforting and support more than the dogs !

if I was holding my pet when they put him to sleep I'm afraid I would be so upset that it would be a bad thing for the dog? I don't know and I dread the day that might happen. :(

You do it out of love no matter how painful it is for you. I cried the whole time and just kept telling him how loved and cherished he was. It beat the hell out of a cold metal table in the vets office.

I don't think it's a bad thing, I think they need to know you are with them. My poor little guy couldn't see and was scared. I had my hand on him and the assistant told me to get close to him so he could smell me and know I was with him. I was a basket case (sobbing) but he knew I was with him. I had my face up to his and was rubbing his head.

when we had one of ours put down the vet came to our house and did it in the garage. my hubby asked if we should let the other dog come in and see her. I did not think it was a good idea because my other dog HATED that vet. I thought him seeing his girlfriend laying there and then seeing the one person in the worl he hated the most standing next to her may not have been a good combo..lol

this hits close to home right now... as I may be close to having make the same choice... it sucks.

I deal with this everyweekend.. but when it comes to your dog.. it hurts like heck!

But being a good pet owner is knowing when to let them go, Its the best gift you can give your pet that has been loyal and faithful to you their whole life.

When I had to put Ginger down, I called a local Shaman to bless her and to help her understand her transition.

She was able to tell me that Ginger was ready to go and what her purpose in our lives was and how she fulfilled that purpose.

She also blessed the rest of us, including my other dog, and advised me what my other dog would need to help him through the change.

I can't say for sure that it made a difference, but I had a healthier respect for the life of my dog and a more positive way of coping with her passing. I still cried buckets.

The next morning, I took Ginger to the vet and made arrangements to have her cremated.

The younger male dog became the protector of the household and needed a little bit of reassurance and encouragement. Since he was used to following the female dog, regular walks on a lead and free ranging walks in the woods with voice commands seemed to help.

Had my 7 1/2 year old male Rottie put down at the ER Vet in Waldorf because he was so bad off with Pancreatic Cancer (they diagnosed it). Brought his Mother in so she could be present, but she never showed any signs that she understood what was happening, but then again animals do sense death, so she had to know he died. She was about 10 years old when he died and she lived to be 12 1/2.

I put down my 9yr old beagle in July, the worst thing I have ever had to do. My poor baby girl GSD seems down ever since.

Now I want to go home and hug her too after reading all these posts...:poorbaby:

Such A Depressing Thread

I know it's all part of being a pet owner. Having to adopt one out is hard enough. I had to do that last year.

Different story: We lost a Border Collie when I was a kid. She was Mom's dog; got her when she was a puppy. (The dog) She ran off one night from St. Andrew's Estates. We found her the next day on 235 when it was 4-lanes.
THAT was tough to handle.
