Actually, the speed limit is 45. Yes, people speed terribly on the road and believe me, it's just not locals. They also pass on double yellow lines and often go over the yellow lines on curves. I'm a bit surprised there aren't more accidents on the road.
My understanding it was on Brenton Beach Road, not Medley's Neck Road.

Yes, it was on that road but redhead77 posted the speed limit on Medley's Neck Road is 40 and I was just correcting them as it is actually 45. The motorcyclist was observed before that driving very erratically on Medley's Neck and turned onto Breton Beach Road.

It was on Breton Beach road. There is paint marks where the whole incident occured. On the scanner the officer said he had to do 85 attempting to get him to stop. Yes one paper said it was a short pursuit it was about 5-6 miles I know the road he came off of onto Breton Beach road and ended on the corner where the paint is at the intersection of Medleys Neck rd.

LEONARDTOWN, Md. - The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office just reported that Deputy Mark A. Porter, who on Saturday shot a motorcyclist, has been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of an investigation. The man reportedly pulled a knife and attacked the officer and a bystander during a routine traffic stop near Leonardtown.

Police also report that the motorcyclist, Steven Todd Coryell, 40, is still listed in stable condition at Washington Hospital Center.

On Saturday, March 24 at approximately 7:29 p.m., Deputy Sheriff Porter attempted to conduct a vehicle stop in the Leonardtown area. The vehicle, a 2005 Harley Davidson, initially refused to stop and a short pursuit ensued. The motorcycle eventually pulled over to the side of the road.

Police suspect the rider, Coryell, was under the influence of an unknown substance. As roadside tests were being explained, Coryell allegedly produced a knife and threatened the Deputy. During the course of the confrontation, the Deputy fired one round from his agency-issued weapon. The man was hit, but the wound only temporarily stopped him, say police. As the suspect attempted to flee on foot, additional officers were able to place him in custody and administer medical treatment.

Why was the officer placed on leave? Wasn't shooting the psycho justified?

It's automatic until the investigation is done. Standard practice in law enforcement throughout the country.

If they don't, and another shooting happens, the county could face a lawsuit.

As for justified, yes it seems so, but that determination is based on a thorough impartial investigation, not just what appears in the paper.

Yes, it's actually designated on some bikers thing as "the" route to take instead of route 5.

People fly thru here at extremely high rates of speed and it's absolutely ridiculous.

I got bits & pieces on the scanner last night....The Dep. came on screaming "Officer needs assistance, shots fired" then he came back on "Put the knife down, Put the knife down" then he came on later and said "Suspect in custody but he slashed both sides of his throat" It was wild as hell...Then they switched to another channel...

I guess the policy in St Marys County is shoot first, ask questions later?

According to Dupontster's post, the deputy shot before instructing him to put the knife down. Now, I don't think Dupontster has a vested interest in this, so I don't think he's lying about what he heard.

Re-read post #55. The officer clearly failed to uphold the continuum of force. He should be tarred and feathered on the steps of the courthouse.

You might want to glance at this article as well:

What came over the scanner was only when Mark Porter had his repeater keyed on. So the WHOLE event did not get transmitted...DUH!!! So you draw your conclusions with out having WITTNESSED what really did happen.
The ONLY reason I am responding to you is because you have so many reltivites that need an explanation also. :deadhorse :deadhorse

He attempted to stop him. He went around the DNR officer. Stated subject was not stopping declared 1080 possible 1055. Crossed over double yellow line on the otherside of the road. Very clear on scanner after he got him stopped he ran the drivers lic and reg. Then put the knife down. Signal 13 tone was dropped. Then it stated subject cut himself he used the tazer then shot him. He attempted to flee on foot tazered him again. After several orders to put the knife down. I know what I heard on the scanner and understand. I also have the channel they switched to. Thank god through the whole incident Deputy Porter had since to key up his radio. Followed the policy Dick no questions asked. :banghead:
