Should I have been notified??

So kiddo tells me a disturbing story this weekend. Kiddo is eight and in third grade....

She says "sometime in May" two girls in her class put a note on her desk saying "I am going to kill you tonight with a gun."

Apparently teacher was notified and school counselor was brought in, and the girls were given an "action plan" which to the best of my knowledge, is just like a don't do it again kinda thing. My point is shouldn't I have been at least notified?? With all that is going on in the world today, shouldn't I have been told??

What say you forumites??

Yes. I'd raise holy hell with the school for not letting you know. They should not rely on an 8 year old to tell you. Shame on the teacher!

 I'm surprised girl didn't tell you herself right away! It would have been nice if the school had notified you that there was an issue and informed you of their actions. What does the school handbook say about notification?

Oh yeah! They should have contacted you either by phone or mail to inform you of this. What school is this? Any time there is any incident at my childs school they send out a letter school wide, and put the school on lockdown while they do a search. I would raise hell if I were you.

Don't be so quick to blame the teacher- she may have been advised not to say anything.

Yes, absolutely! I swear, they scream "NO TOLERANCE" for violence (to include threats), but then when a kid threatens another, they slap their hand and say "Bad boy/girl" and that's it! There needs to be harsher consequences, because even if they do it as a joke, how do you know it's a joke and it's not freaking funny anyway.

Yes, you should have been notified of the threat to your daughter. However, the school is not allowed to tell you how the other girls were disciplined. When you call the school, stay calm and simply share with them what your daughter told you. Then, if it pans out the way you think it will, then GO OFF!!

Well I'm probably going to get slammed here but heregoes... I think the kid should have told you. The teachers maybe thought seeings how your kid notified teacher that she would notify you as well. I mean especially that night and all. Something like "hey Mom guess what happened at school today" or ... "hey Mom someone said they'd kill me tonight with a gun, I just wanted to let you know" Something... ANYTHING along those lines maybe. I do think that perhaps the school should have followed up with you or something though. I'm not understanding why the kid felt okay to notify teacher but neglected to tell the parent. JMO :huggy:

That kid is 8 and should not be held responsible for not telling her. She was probably embarassed by it all.

But it could have been life threatening  The kid wasn't too embarassed to tell the teacher and get the girls the punishment they deserved:shrug:

Talking to your parents is much harder. You do not have kids. Therefore, you do not know much on this subject.

Yes. Go raise hell.
...with your kid.
The school probably assumed your child would be able to remember recieving a death threat and would pass that info along to you.
