Then it shouldn't be a problem.
:poorbaby: I wish I knew how to transcribe "windowlicker" into french" so that somehow it would sound wordly - other than what it truly is...

Slobberer de fenêtre.

what I've glanced at this morning mainly says small dogs really aren't that great with small children. They do well with courteous ones and mine are far from that when it would come to a dog. Therefore, maybe I can talk my hubby into an American Staffordshire Terrier or an American Bulldog. :yay: They are both great with kids.

The only other thing I have to think of is the time alone. The dog would be alone the majority of the day while we are at work and the kids at daycare/school. There would be a crate for sure.

How do the boxers do w/ crates and kids Catt?

I'm so glad you asked. Boxers are WONDERFUL with kids. Are you planning to get a pup? Mine did well with the crate. Boxers are HAPPY dogs and require training (you can do it) so they learn not to jump, etc.

If you're not set on a puppy, you can find some really nice young Boxers in rescue that would make great pets.

I'd be happy to have you meet my dogs, see their personality, etc.

 My kids are not the most courteous ones either and both the pug and the boxer we have put up with them. The pug is a lot more tolerable with them though. All he wants is a warm body to snuggle up next to most of the time.

And we do not crate either one during the day, only at night and sometimes that doesn't even happen. The boxer will sleep in the bed with the boy and the pug will sleep in the bed with the girl.

For a first dog and small kids like yours, you really need to think about the big picture. A puppy is going to be like having another baby. Puppies really shouldn't be crated for long periods (while you guys are working). They need potty breaks. They take time to train, etc. An older dog from a rescue would be good because most often they've been crate trained and evaluated very well...you know what you're getting.

When my kids were growing up, we had Boomer, our Golden Retriever. He was the absolute best dog with our kids and everyone's kids. He was very laid back, just a wonderful fellow. Only issue with a Golden is the HAIR!

What about a Border Collie? My SIL has one and that's probably the most laid back dog I've ever seen.

I'm pretty sure that hubby would want to get a puppy. But I could talk to him and maybe over time he would change his mind to an older dog. We were looking at getting a lab, but the hair issues are a problem. I have allergies and can't handle too much hair floating about. A short haired dog would be great in our house.

I'll chat w/ R and I'm sure at some point we would love to bring the boys up to meet the "family"
