Oh, those shaggy dogs are to die for!!!

I couldn't even see his face when I saw him, all fur in his face. I fell for the shaking body and the need to save a life, to truly make a difference. He's been an absolute JOY in the house of hounds too. Smartie every day.

Go for any mix with a dachshund. I've got a dachshund coon hound mix, 35 lbs who is just the best tempermented creature I could ask for. She's much better with kids than I am. I also recently rescued a little black mop of a terrier mix (might be a schnauzer) weighing in at 23 lbs who is the smartest thing. Go to the pound, pick out a little black dog and you will live happily ever after.

Dexter, the terrier mix and Darwin, the supposed dachshund aussie mix. Dolly's nose in the background.

Aw, your furry family is adorable. :yay: We had a purebred dachshund when I was growing up, but due to the teasing of neighbor kids she absolutely hated kids in general. But dachshunds on a whole are great with kids from what I've seen. Gentle as lambs and very tolerant.

I also have seen Corgis and Bassett Hounds who have great patience with rugrats.

I'll bet. He looks like a good cuddler, I'd just hug him all day.

Wow, she and I have a lot in common, with the hating kids thing.

Really, any breed can be great with kids, it's how they're brought up and trained. Fortunately, with a little training and a little effort and a little common sense, any dog can be great with kids. The real issue is to teach your kids to be great with dogs.

When I got him home that first day, and he got his bath (cause PU) he jumped right up into my lap, put his arms on my shoulders, and put his nose and lips on my lips. No slobbery kiss, just touched me, breathed in deeply and pulled away, sighing, and laying his head on my shoulder. I've never had a rescue do that before, and I was hooked.

 It was definitely learned behavior. The kids from the next neighbor over cutting through behind our house took great joy in tormenting her while she was in her fenced yard. :ohwell:

Exactly. For example, I've seen Dobies that are the greatest with kids and others that despised them. It all depends on how they're raised and what they're exposed to when growing up.

How sweet! I rescued a kitty a little over a month ago, and he became very sick very fast. Before all was said and done, I was hand feeding him and basically at his beck and call. He repaid me by giving me ringworm, but he's the most appreciative kitty I've ever met. He loves to cuddle and finds my socks and puts them in the basket he sleeps in with his blankie. I love that little bugger so much.

Pomeranians - Have 2 and they are sweet, playful and good with kids they know. They are shy with strangers.

Get a small mutt. If you get a purebred you may find they don't care for kids in most cases. My two just love everybody. Enjoy your search. :howdy:
mutts all the way! my 1yr old niece uses the dogs to walk with, and the go up to her and just stand there while she climbs all over them :lmao: But they also like her for her food... there also good with younger children, and o ther animals. you just have to find the right one!

You all are forgetting the fact that CableChick is allergic to most dog breeds. she must chose from the short "hypoallergenic" list so that she doesn't bring a dog into her house only to find out she can't tolerate it and then breaking everyone's heart when she has to give the dog up.
