small dogs that are good with kids

A lot of short haired dogs shed a lot.....Just remember to do a lot of research on the breed you "think" you want.

Oh yeah! No doubt there will be lots of research. I told oldest he could get one when he was 10! :yay:

We have a Yorkie-Poo who has been fabulous since we brought the baby home. She pays no attention to the crying and when he laying on the floor/couch goes up and lays next to him. She is 5lbs and she is full grown and doesn't shed.

That is the perfect dog for CC:yay:

You can't go wrong with a bully breed of any type. They tend to be low to average shedders but the hair is fine/soft, I can't explain it. B had horrible allergies and did well with Mily.

If you're set on small than I'd consider a Frenchie or a Boston. Both of which I'm considering depending on the size of the house/yard we end up with.

Bigger... Any of them really, Pits, Boxers, American's are all wonderful with kids.

I'm worried about really small dogs due to roughhousing. I want the boys to be able to PLAY with the dog .. not just pet it and say awww, how cute.

Anyone know anything about a Rat Terrier?
My Rattie loves any and all people, but hates other dogs (except for the golden across the street). Of course when she visits the kennel she doesn't fight with any dogs - she enjoys playing with them.
Mine was a rescue and already 5 years old. She will play very energetically but she still spends a majority of the time snuggled up next to someone with her blanket.
Although she's done very well with visiting babies and toddlers, I'm not sure if its the best breed to have around little kids all the time. Especially not if you get a pup because they are very bouncy.
Get a golden and buy a Dyson vacuum.

:yeahthat: You really need to spend some time with a breed to ensure you can tolerate them before you commit to bringing one in the house. My husband reacts to most short-haired dogs the same as he reacts to long-haired.

You really need to focus on the allergy friendly breeds. We went mini-schnauzer and she sleeps between hubby and I and he is fine with her.

Bostons and Frenchies are solid and why they're a consideration for us. Built like a bully just smaller.

That's another reason I went mini-schnauzer... they are very smart, playful, and stocky enough to deal with rough housing.

My J.R.T. is almost 5 now and has gotten nippy with the children in the past a few times. I will say that the punishment is never beyond the offense or reason he snipped in the first place. They are not recommended for people with children under 5 years of age.

My J.R.T. runs the roads all the time with the boys. Those in my hood know that where ever the boys are, the dog is in follow. They taught him to water surf on a boggy board, but he doesn’t seem interested in skate boarding. But, many have said my J.R.T.'s personality isn't typical of J.R.T.

Labs, Boxers, Goldens are great with kids. Mystical has puppies right now that I bet will be fantastic with children. :yay:

I currently have two shih tzu's that I rescued. I had three, but lost my old man in Sept. from old age, he was 14. GREAT DOGS! They are great with kids, love to play and don't have the energy that some of the other small dogs have. Also, they don't shed! They have hair that is referred to by the vets as closer to human hair. They require grooming, but other than that, they are the best dogs to have.

I have a 14 month old and she loves to pull and grab them. They generally let her do whatever, and when they get tired, just run and hide from her. I wanted to get a pug, but they tend to shed alot.

They stay small, mine ranged in weight from about 11 pounds to 15 pounds. They get along well with all other animals, including cats.

Good luck

Have you thought about beagles? They are pretty good family dogs...very easy going. There are a TON of them in the shelters. They are pretty small, short haired, and good with kids. Their nose tends to get them in trouble sometimes, so a fenced yard is ideal.

Beagles are not a good choice for someone allergic to dog fur... major trigger... :boo:

Mine is the same way....but CC stated in an earlier reply, she cannot get over the way the pug's eyes look.

:yeahthat: I've had a maltese and now have a pomeranian...neither are all that great with other children. My pommy is great with my kids but not so much with others. :ohwell:

My Maltese Loves kids...... When a child enters my house he will bark until they play with him. He does scare some kids at first but once they understand that all he wants is attention from them then all is well.
