I don't think Larry smokes.
Don't know if he does or not, but someone fed him a line of bull about it.

He needs to talk to people that have quit after being long time smokers, they can tell him the ill effects of quitting.. other then being a little cranky overcoming an addiction, THERE ARE NONE!!

I don't know where you got this voodoo science from, but nicotine doesn't attack germs and viruses, it attacks and retards the immune system making germs and viruses more effective against us.

People that quit generally speak of getting sick less often, getting less colds in the winter, not getting the flu or not getting as sick is they do get it. etc..

Smell is more sensitive, you can taste your food again, you can tell good tasting water, from over chlorinated water.. AND maybe you can smell the cats litter box, or that you even have a dog in the house.

Smoking is not good for you in any way shape or form, but if this is what you have to tell youself to sleep at night it's cool. That's probably a lot easier then quitting.

...to respond to you as you didn't seem to read what I wrote the first time. Seems pretty straightforward when I re-read it.

You can google as you wish about nicotine.

That doesn't mean you have to be nasty about it.

I've noticed that most quitters are much nastier about smokers than people who have never smoked.

Many people who quit smoking get sick frequently as their body's immune system got used to the nicotine killing off many run of the mill bugs; cold germs, virus's. Quitters often find themselves more bothered by pets, pollen and the like, at least for a time until their bodies adjust.

I quit a long time ago. I got colds easier and was bothered more by the cats and other things...until my body adjusted to the lack of nicotine in my system.

Larry was a long time smoker who quit, so I think he knows a little bit about it.

My mother quit 30 years ago and she developed allergies (to animals, dust and several other things) that still plague her, and she herself will tell you that she gets more colds than she did when she smoked.

So you, Bob, can pull your head out of your ass.

That's because they're jealous that others are sitting around enjoying a smoke.

Those who've never smoked don't have those cigarette-envy issues.

Wiki:

recent studies suggest that smokers require less frequent repeated revascularization after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).[11] Risk of ulcerative colitis has been frequently shown to be reduced by smokers on a dose-dependent basis; the effect is eliminated if the individual stops smoking.[12][13] Smoking also appears to interfere with development of Kaposi's sarcoma,[14] breast cancer among women carrying the very high risk BRCA gene,[15] preeclampsia,[16] and atopic disorders such as allergic asthma.[17] A plausible mechanism of action in these cases may be nicotine acting as an anti-inflammatory agent, and interfering with the inflammation-related disease process, as nicotine has vasoconstrictive effects.[18]

Bob, you were wrong to make the blanket statement you did. I got what Larry meant. He wasn't praising smoking.

Quit a long time ago, became allergic to cats but never liked them anyway.

Never wanted to start again or jealous of people smoking

I've never met a smoker who's regretted quitting.

However, I've often heard that withdrawal is worse than they were led to believe, and the benefits - such as enhanced sense of smell and food tasting better - are greatly exaggerated.

I've watched the quitting process once or twice firsthand and along with a couple of psychotic episodes, there was a great deal unpleasantness including when the lungs start to "eject" things. I suppose that nicotine and tar deposits collected within the lungs begin to get expelled after a period of non-smoking which translates into very painful coughing that yeilds black .... things and a small amount of blood.

It's not as bad as heroin withdrawal, perhaps, but a heck of a lot worse than kicking a habit such as coffee.

Us quitters tend to be nastier for many reasons, but jealousy isn't one of them.

The difficulty of quitting showed us a weakness in ourselves that was difficult to overcome. I am ashamed that I was addicted to nicotene, and for years seeing people smoking reminded me of my own addiction.

Also, being around smokers and smelling the stale smoke, seeing the stained fingers and teeth, hearing the smokers cough, and seeing people huddled together in frigid nasty weather to feed their addiction reminds us of just how pathetic we were. Rather than sympathize with smokers, we pity them.

I was a vocal anti-smoker like Bob for the first five years after I quit. It's been 12 years now, so I've gotten over it. I really don't care if people want to shorten their lives. I just avoid places that have excessive smoke.

There are only three things that still bother me about smokers:

1. People who can barely feed their kids or pay their rent, but can somehow afford a pack or two per day.

2. People who throw their butts on the ground.

3. People who violate non-smoking areas, particularly in dangerous situations(pumping gas) or around kids.

When Larry quit he just...quit. Stopped smoking and that was the end of it. He wasn't anymore grouchy than normal :)lol:) and he didn't appear to go through withdrawal. And he was a good two pack a day smoker.

I think that's person to person. I'm currently on my 3rd time to quit and the withdrawl is crazy. It's not any kind of physical pain, I just start going nuts trying to figure out how to justify getting one more.

That or I was in a Jealous rage, not sure which..

I haven't had many problems with withdrawals and quitting, and you can tell by the callouses on my fingers where I've tried to chew them to the bone.

Hang in there.. Took me 3 x before I did not need another smoke..Last time I did was on August 2, 2000. So far, have not had the desire to smoke. Plus now, the smell of cigarettes really is nasty. Never knew how bad the smoke made me smell, my car, my cloths, my office..yuck...
OK.. so I put on a few pounds, but I bought a fantastic new PC after not somking for a full year..saved up over 2 grand!! Now that is a reason NOT to smoke.
Plus it was getting harder to smoke at work,,they moved us all outside..and smoking in the freezing cold was no longer fun.
So hang in there ...OK?

BadGirl

I am so very blessed
Hearing of the difficulties of quitting smoking, and the physical and emotional pain of quitting the addiction, I am so grateful that I never took up the habit.

I applaud anyone who can quit.

But in our pussy-whipped namby-pamby touchy-feely gimme-gimme - ME-ME-ME society, when someone finds something to complain about, both barrels begin firing.... And then other like-minded individual also join in with the complaining, then it snowballs until the simple complaints turn into obsession and hyperbole. And now something is moderately unpleasant (at worst), is now defined as a LIFE THREATING PLAGUE MENACE TO SOCIETY AND LIFE ON THIS PLANET AS WE KNOW IT! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! :jameo: :jameo: :jameo: :jameo:

It's a load of crap.

It's a big huge load of crap.

:coffee:
and some George town law professor files an anti smoking lawsuit - he is currently trying to work over fast food joints as pushing death on a tray - like that dumazz who ate McD's for 30 days straight - eating food morning, noon, and night from any fast food joint is just plain dumb, of course the grease and fats are gonna make you sick .......

they have killed the one thing that made McD's Frys better than anyone else - beef tallow [fat] in the fryer oil .....
