I think if you hit kids they will think it is okay to hit. I was surprised that so many people seem to think spanking was a good idea.

I think the reason we have so many hoodlums running around because alot of parents are just absent and not involved with their kids and don't have them involved in activities from a young age. Parental involvement is key. I don't think spanking alone deters kids from unsavory activity.

My mom only had to spank me a couple times when I was younger. That really didn't have an effect on me when I got older so taking away things I loved did the trick. My daughter is taking after her father and being a little badass at times and needs a good swat or two.

My kids know the difference between getting a spanking and just hitting someone. I not only raised well behaved kids..I raised intelligent kids.

Common theme? I think a great deal of societies ilk comes from absentee, missing, disassociated, disinterested father figures. Dad's are more than people who kill spiders and reach stuff on the top shelf.

My dad was present in my life on a daily basis until I was 11 (after my being spanked days were over), and he only spanked me once, and I laughed. My mom was the spanker.

I totally agree with this. I think it's a combination of things.
I don't spank my kids often...but when they need it they get it.

Any time I have witnessed spanking (Wal mart) I thought it was sad and pointless. I hope the kid gets a few in on the parents when they are big enough to fight back.

Parents who do not control their kids, let them rule the roost and run amock like wild spoiled animals at home BUT when their animals act like an ass in public they all of a sudden "care" and spank their kids because they are embarassed are pigs.

I was spanked with leather belts, spatulas, a tennis racket (by an uncle) and the bare hand. The older I get, and now that I have kids, the more fvcked up I realize my parents were. They were young parents, but that's no excuse. We turned out well and I think we were good kids too. The sad part is, I don't remember my actions, but I remember the consequences. Isn't the idea of spanking to beat into the kid that what they did was wrong? I have no recollection of doing anything that resulted in the punishments I received. :shrug:

I would never spank my kids in public. I drag their butts to the bathroom. And only because I wouldn't shame them like that.

Of course...I rarely have to. My kids may act like little heathens sometmes at home..but they know better than to act stupid in public.

I don't see anything wrong with it, but that's just my opinion. It doesn't mean it's right or wrong. Of the friends I have that don't spank their children, some of them are the brattiest, mouthiest kids I've seen.

Maybe their parenting skills lack in other areas, and it's not the lack of spanking that does it? My sisters kids are no better than anyone else's and they readily spank and in my opinion are kinda mean sometimes (God I hope she doesn't read this, lol). Our parenting styles are completely different yet, our kids are very similar.

HE!! YES.. and had to go get the belt, so I KNEW what was coming. And youhave to picture my dad.. 6'4" tall, about 350 lbs (after he recovered from his second trip to Vietnam), and I still make some of life's decisions, with his voice reminding me to make the right choice.
