Taj Mahal of Valley Lee

If I may ...

Well, they could just empty the garage and park all the apparatus elsewhere and use the floor for events. The Prince Frederick Fire House, even before their grand behemoth was built, used their apparatus floor for events and such. Not approving of the gross spending and size of the Taj Mahal of Valley Lee, nor of the Prince Frederick one which still, in my opinion, had several more decades of serviceable use before being torn down and replaced. But, events can still be held, though with very high ceilings, and a not so comfy, as in a normal closed space, atmosphere.

That's not what an event hall is. They have (had) a well-equipped one in the old firehouse, but didn't include one in this one. I don't know how accurate this is but I heard through the grapevine that they didn't include an event hall because they got their feewings hurt by the lack of support from the community for their grossly overbuilt project.

I have yet to hear anything official about the disposition of the original firehouse...maybe the county will take it over and make it a community center. I would hope so..it's s nice brick building. With an event hall.

Do they have enough firefighters to even staff it, or will it be a big creepy building with one person in it alone all the time?
That's the other problem. They are hoping the big shiny new building will help with recruitment. I believe they are using grant money to staff the rescue squad with paid EMTs during the day.

I still don't know why they need half a dozen VFDs around here seeing as any time a shed fire happens there are 5 or 6 departments that respond to it. Why not centrally locate a large VFD in the county and man it properly? It has been proven many times that they have no problem responding to fires outside their respective areas. Huge waste of money that could be used elsewhere.

Until YOUR house catches just fire.
I am sure you can explain how these palatial buildings increase response times to calls. Is the building square footage proportional to the speed at which the fire trucks arrive on-scene?

The new firehouse in Prince Frederick is very large. Go big or go home. I will NEVER argue their worth,

However...

I wonder......who has money invested in the architects, contractors, brick & concrete companies. Jumi Hogan??
Not sure about all the contracts etc. I didn't even really get into the politics of it all because there was a lot of that, as well.

I DO know that at PFVFD, there is a wing upstairs with rooms for both male and female firefighters. They now have space for *more "live in" firefighters, as well as some who come and fill in for different shifts on the weekends and such. The Bay Area where the apparatus is stored also serves as their Rental Hall. There is a commercial kitchen that is available for rent with that hall as well.

There is a pretty nice kitchen inside with a dining room and TV lounge for everybody to hang out, there is a small gym, there are areas/separate rooms upstairs that they can use for training purposes: both classroom and other different types of technical training, one side of the firehouse is strictly for washing the apparatus. That is a neat area because you can pull the truck in and close the bay doors in bad/cold weather.

On my tour of the facility when it was brand new, I really didn't see anything in the station house that looked like an unnecessary expense. They put a lot of effort into retaining some of their past heritage/traditions and making it more modern, as well.

My comment was directed at your comment that you thought they should combine all/several of the volunteer fire departments into one.

That would not increase anybody's response time in a rural area.

I don't really have any input about the type of building/size of building or any of the politics behind it because I haven't been keeping up with that.

Gotcha! Perhaps my comment was not fully defined. I agree about response times. Perhaps 'smaller' satellite facilities strategically located to provide coverage and a main facility worthy of such opulence that is centrally located would be a far better use of resources than the ego contest currently happening.
