If I may ...

And yet, the old fire house building they had was still just fine and had several more decades, if not more, of serviceable use. There was no need to spend the over $11,000,000, $11 Million dollars, to replace it.

Did you ever go into their old building? The original part (4 bays and part closest to Rt. 4) was built in 1959 over 50 years ago. There were 3 additions added in later years with the last in the early 1990's. The concrete floors were cracking and had been patched throughout. The floor heat had several leaks that had to be repaired. The bay doors were narrow and there was only about 6" clearance on each side going in and out. Today's apparatus is much larger (wider/longer) than the apparatus of pre-1990. There were 2 offices (8'x10') shared by 4 officers and several 4 drawer and lateral file cabinets. The new building as I toured it is set up much better as Bann stated. More office space individual bunkrooms to facilitate the male and female members. As I recall, they have 12 members living in the station. Unfortunately, they still have to stack the apparatus to get all of it inside the building.

Concrete cracks, thats what it does over time.
Cut wider garage doors in, add a office addition. Do the live ins pay rent when not working?
And that would have saved the taxpayer 6.7 million...
6.7 MILLION....

I'm sure I didn't do it justice, as I was only in the old building once and this new building once- about an hour. My son didn't grow up in the FD and no one else in my family was affiliated with the FD. So I really don't know MUCH of anything about the history of that building.

They do really have a much nicer facility than the old one, though.

*and 1959 is over 60 years ago! ;) (I was born in 1959!)

No, they do not pay rent. The DRAW for the live ins - is that they are on call during that time. They're available 24/7 when not working. Which, in my son's case is every day except that 3rd 24 hour shift and/or any OT he works. (which is a lot, actually)

I know you're not exactly criticizing, but think about it. The live ins ARE ON CALL while in the station. NO EXCUSES. (when the station has an event to attend, they actually get coverage from other members or neighboring stations.) That greatly, and oftentimes, drastically, reduces the response times. I think that's worth not paying rent, in all seriousness. They're worth EVERY penny we pay to let them live there.

I wasn't criticizing at all, I was asking a question...
I find it interesting especially with the taxes in Md and St Marys, Calvert and other county's there are not paid FF in place years ago. Please tell your son thank you.

Thank you. He doesn't like it when I brag about him, and he just takes it all with a grain of salt. "It's a job."

As his mom, It still amazes me that he runs into burning buildings and does it nearly 24/7 since he's volunteer and career. I really don't worry about him at all, because he's highly trained and he's a professional. He doesn't care for the EMS side of things in PGFD - that's not his "calling" but it's required. He looks at that as a part of the job he has to do. A really cool thing is since I live in PF - there are times I get to see him driving those big-a** engines, trucks/squad - whatever you wanna call them. They're YUUGE trucks and my little boy (who towers over me and has muscles like the incredible hulk to his mom) actually drives them!! and occasionally they go screaming by when I happen to be in the area. :jameo:

(**They've talked about the Paid FFs for years here in Calvert. However, I thought Calvert was still the only ALL VOUNTEER VFD in the Tri-County area. )

This new building is going to haunt them for years.

Spend budget on the stuff is unneeded first then when you don't have enough for essentials it will have to be provided.

Appears those at the Valley Lee FD took the script from the Air Force's play book. Congress approves a new air base and appropriates the funding. Air Force first builds all the buildings, barracks, mess hall, officers club, etc., then runs out of money. Then goes back to congress stating they need more money to build the runways and control tower.

Well, they have to maintain the lifestyle they've grown accustomed to.

That was always SOP where I used to live, whenever there was a government shortfall or they couldn't get an increased budget approved it was somehow magically always going to result in less gear for police/fire or not enough money to run the prison so early release of prisoners would be required (rather than perhaps less often cutting grass at county parks or selling more bonds to build the new public works building).

That's the way the Air Force has operated for years. Build a new base, put in commissary, housing, even a golf course, etc. Then ask for more funds because an air base needs hangers and runways. But unlike your comment about unneeded stuff, all of those things are needed, just not in that order. If the Navy operated that way the base housing would be much better because it would have been built first to higher standards.

Golf course, o club, hobby shops not so much, commissary yes, base housing yes. Just piss poor prioritizing.

Its that way everywhere, when asking for more money for the PD & FD it tugs at the taxpayer like all the commercials for the starving dogs and cats on tv...
Who wants to pay more tax for the water dept...

Out west the most political signs I saw was for water commissioner, I was like WTF. This was in the mojave desert though, Ridgecrest CA.
Good ole PRC Puddle, the only place that makes you say "why couldn't I be somewhere nicer, like Barstow".
