All I wanted to do tonight was watch the episode of Modern Family that I missed last week. Now I get to spend an hour fiddling with what used to work because Apple has decided that their product shouldn't work anymore.
Oh, and I'm also done with the "cloud" because I don't want them controlling my software and shutting me down as they see fit.

Why don't you explain to the class how that could possibly happen? Violent jpg? Contact synching gone bad?
Well, I just had my iPad go south because Apple decided that I didn't need to use it anymore, so what happens when everything is in their "cloud"?
Currently syncing my apps so they'll be back on my ####Pad again, and perhaps they'll even be kind enough to reinstate the zillion books I've bought so I don't have to redownload every single one of them.
I will never give Apple another dime of my money.

Vrai, calm down. There are so many members on this forum that are computer savvy, and are telling you that your iPad can be updated. I am not tech savvy at all; and have dropped a laptop when we lost power, and broke the screen, and my hub ordered another one and installed it himself. Your iPad can be brought up to date. Since, I am trying to comfort you, does that mean you will invite me to your next party? Not holding my breath.

So, two hours later, I finally have an iPad again after hooking it up to my computer, updating my iTunes, downloading and updating the iOS, and syncing my apps. My books are there, but the order is hosed so that the book I was in the middle of, I now have to find my place again, plus the recent books and samples are no longer "recent".
It shouldn't be this difficult.

Your books will synchronize. They just need time. I'm sure it was done a few minutes after whining.

Check out non-Apple tablets before you buy. Consumer Reports gave the Samsung Galaxy a great review, and Google Nexus is supposedly a good one as well.
