This is why I hate Apple

The biggest problem with any Apple is they're ridiculously expensive for what you get. For $50 less than the IPAD at Best Buy I got a 17" laptop with a 1Tb drive and 8gb or RAM.

The IPAD is way too much money for nothing more than a lame toy.

* It's Apple. Why are the iPad browser and email program so lame??

The email, however, is just about as stupid as an email program can be and almost completely worthless.

My Droid phone does a better job of handling email than the iPad.

I have had no issues using mail on my iPhone or iPad - works great with my yahoo or Gmail account ....

.... and I use Outlook at work because we have exchange on the back end

[no I do not use my idevice for work email - yet]

You know what? Take a look at the Kindle Fire. For basic use, it's supposed to be a pretty good tablet.

The (non iPad) tablets are more appealing, because I do use my laptop a LOT when I'm away from home on "Booster mom" duty (for my high school son Thing2). I have my Excel spreadsheets and booster meeting notes, etc. that I do away from home sometimes. Gosh, when my mom was in the nursing home, transferred to the hospital and then hospice - I was always running from one place to another and one event to another for her or either of the Things' events/activities. Bringing my laptop along to be able to work while I sat with her or waited for tests to be run, etc. was fine - but if I'd had a tablet it would have been *that* much easier.

I'm glad you posted this thread! The people I know with iPads are mostly women - and I know for certain they do NOT do the maintaining of their own computers. Their husbands do. So if I have to fool around and go through all sorts of machinations to keep up to date, or whatever, it would aggravate me, too.

Much food for thought.

I have a blue tooth keyboard and Quick Office Pro [HD] I use on my iPad .... just like having a small light laptop .... with a screen way bigger than my net book

Quick Office is also available for the Droid Eco-sphere

What is this blue tooth keyboard thingy you speak of?!

Thing2 (16) was just telling me he turns on the blue tooth on his Droid phone to use his iPod Touch to get on the internet sometimes when he's not near a wireless connection. :jameo: All this technology I guess I didn't know about! More like I don't have the time to keep up with it all. :ohwell:

My Laptop.

The last one lasted 7 years for my office work. The desktop is going on 6 years now.

And yes. It's a toy. It has no significant computing value.

You really don't. You also can't compare a 1st gen iPad to a new Android tablet.

You can be notified of new iOS updates or you can not, it's a choice. Same with iTunes updates, but that is irrelevant now since iOS 5. Office documents work fine for me on iPad but for heavy use you want a pc.

Android can be great if you get it directly from google. OEMs ruin the Android experience.

Finally the MS Surface tablet comes out in less than 3 weeks. If you need more of a windows environment this could be just what you are looking for. Has to come out first though before you will know for sure.

One of the biggest deterrents for me is the price. I could pay the price for the iPad, but I don't like paying that much money for something when I could get a similar product for a lot less money. I am not hung up on the Apple name or products - I would probably be just as satisfied with an Android model.

Also, I know Vrai and how she uses her computers. I respect her opinion. I don't have near the amount of work or time needed near a PC that she does. I know she also has a much greater knowledge of computers and such than I do. I do have friends (and KIDS) who can help me out - but if I had to do all that stuff she posted every time I needed to update my computer - it would not be the computer for me.

I'm glad I didn't fork out the money for an iPad just yet. I will take a little more time & think about it. :yay:

The $500 laptop, hands down.

Then you must not do a whole lot besides check your email and surf the web. You cannot design a proper webpage using an iPad, nor can you manage your business finances, nor can you run admin programs, nor can you create high-res professional quality graphics. Running down code bugs is a tedious and maddening experience because the screen is so small and it's easy to miss characters. I'm sure there are a lot of other things you cannot do with an iPad that you can do with a laptop, but those are the things *I* do when I'm on travel but still need to get work done.

A tablet does not replace a laptop for productivity purposes. What the tablet IS for is portable email, entertainment, and internet access, which is why I have one. The laptop doesn't fit in my purse.

I don't keep up on it either, which is ridiculous considering what I do for a living. When I run into a problem, I need (or would like) my computer or phone to do something that I don't think it does, I post my wishlist on here and some smart techy nerd will come on and straighten me out.
