I was quoted $980 in labor to replace the water pump, fan clutch, and thermostat in my SUV. I decided to swap out the alternator too, since it had to come off in the process. I finished the job in 4.5 hours and even installed a CAT back system which took about another 2 hours.

:shocking:

Thing is.....all I need.....well, right now, is brake lines; hopefully :fingerscrossed: just one brake hose. There's NO WAY the labor charge for that is $980/hr..

Why? I possess the knowledge; I lack the tools. Possessing the knowledge without the tools required for such an undertaking does me no good. It's not so much that I couldn't do it myself; it's the fact that I don't have the tools to manufacture the required finished system.....tubing benders/mandrels etc.. If I had those things, no one here would be reading this.

You never needed any special tools. All you need to do is get the lines pre-bent. They sell the whole kit for a 1999 Chevy Silverado K1500 for a little over $100.

Easy for you to encourage him to work on his own brake lines with him traveling the roads here and you being way out in WV...:bonk:

I was just in Maryland Saturday (up north in Bel Air) glad to get out again, the air really stinks out there. On the way back passed a guy hauling a trailer and as I went by I caught his graphics that said Coombs Creek Marina.

I'll be back that way in June after the kids get out of school to bring one of my granddaughters out for a month or so. Can't wait to watch the boredom set in.

Boredom?!?!?! I used to love spending a couple weeks of summer with my Grandpa in Johnstown, PA. We did a lot of hiking, gardening, berry picking, and outdoorsy stuff. Good times.

The only thing(s) missing in this kit is/are these, for the front end; which is where I think the real problem is, anyway.

Those are $13 a side at Auto Zone. So for under $150 in parts you can replace every inch of lines on the that thing. Man up and get'r done.

HEeey.....I resemble that remark! :burning:

You're right though......I possess the knowledge and the tools to do the job; I just lack the confidence in my own abilities.

You see, brake repair is; to me; one of those things one can't say, "Weeellll.....that LOOKS right;" just to find out; hopefully not catastrophically; that it's not.

Dropped off the truck @ Mr. Tire last night. This morning, they call me and tell me that the faulty brake line is broken in a place they "don't feel comfortable working with." ???

Those brake lines are inside the frame rail almost the full length of the truck, and everything in the way needs to come out. Trans (maybe) and fuel tank. Did they mention that the fuel lines are made of the same stuff? And that you stand a better than even chance of destroying those trying to remove the fuel tank? And that there's a good chance that the integrated fuel pump/level sensor might bite it during the disconnection process? For another $600 for that part and more labor? That's what they told me.

Bet the above is what's up. They dont want to take the chance on tripling the repair bill and having you walk away from the truck.....

As long as I don't get a bill when I pick up the truck, I'm good. Well.....I've been reading reviews about Martin's Auto Tech in H'wood.....I guess I'll give him a call. Probably should've gone there in the first place.

They are obviously in over their head. Take your truck to a better shop. Mr. Tire breaks more stuff than they fix anyway.

Well, this is new information for me. I've never had to pay for this type of thing.
Dad was the mechanical genius. The unknown is, of course, the TOTAL; incl. parts. That's what concerns me; but, I do want to keep the truck, so.....

If you have the time, why not dive in? I mean, I presume it's not the daily driver so if you screw it all up and it has to sit for the following weekend or evenings, so what? You'll be developing some skill, getting to know more about the truck you intend to keep and you've got resources.
