I emailed that collegiate link to my boyfriend, who graduated a year and a half ago from Virginia Tech. He had one of the professors for a class. He still knows people who go to school there, so he's been trying to find out whether people are alright. Most of our place is decorated in VT stuff, so it's like I got up this morning, and you have that feeling inside of you that says "oh yeah..." It's just such a sad time.

I'll tell you what I hate most of all:

They keep showing the photo of paramedics carrying that dead kid out. I keep thinking about his mother and father seeing that photo over and over. It doesn't mean anything to the new dudes except for ratings, but a set of parents somewhere are sick at the sight of it.

It about makes me vomit.

...Washington Times have this giant front page shot of that. I can't freaking believe it. No one said "This is wrong. Don't show it."

Damn, people.

^ That one? I thought I heard that person was among the injured, not the dead. :ohwell: If he survived, fine, I feel a bit better about the picture, but if he is dead, no, that has to be awful for the parents to see that over and over again.

I thought he was among the injured as well  But still, I'm sure he didn't consent to the picture being taken of him, then released, then flooding new articles around the world.

...cut himself shaving. In context of the incident it's like "Here, mom, wherever you are. Is this your 200# pound sack of meat?"

Imagine it's your son or brother. You know you recognize him RIGHT AWAY. You can't get a hold of him. Some cop is anwering his cell phone and doesn't know jack. His friends aren't sure if he's dead or alive. The lines to the authorities are jammed. No one seems to know. One official finally says he's among the deceased. You get someone else. He's fine. A third person says they have no record of him being there.

It's bad enough as it is. That picture is freaking horrible and could wait. There's no need to be gratuitous about this. What's tomorrow? CSI shots of someones sister sprawled in a pool of blood? Autopsy shots?

It's horrible.

Since when do you have to consent to get your photo taken and used?

Unfortunately that's what those creeps would call "the money shot".

I was watching Fox this morning and this bubble-headed bleach-blonde was interviewing some kid who survived the German class attack. She all but called him a coward for hiding behind desks and not trying to rush the gunman.

The news coverage of this is sickening. Reminds me of Katrina, with all those reporters asking refugees the most idiotic questions. "How do you feel now that your home has been destroyed and you're on your own with an infant and nothing to eat or nowhere to stay? :lickschops:"

Thank you. I kept yelling at Otter on the ride home yesterday while we were listening to the press conference.

Perhaps I don't understand a lot of things. What exactly do the reporters think "lockdown" means in the context of a large university? It's not a single building, it is a community. What is the plan to notify students in that type of setting of impending danger? I'm not sure what could have been done differently. Kids that weren't in class could have been in bed, or just not near their computer or had their cell phone turned off. Or, there could have been worse chaos by announcing a gunman was loose with people running everywhere. It's just a bunch of what ifs.

And the stupid questions the reporters ask over and over as if they think the police/school officials will forget that they addressed the fact that they can't divulge that information just minutes earlier.

I understand the desire to place blame somewhere. There were 32 too many people killed yesterday. It is heartbreaking. But the shooter wanted to kill people, and I doubt that anything would have stopped him.

One engineering student with his own sidearm.
Unfortunately, the school admin preferred "feeling" safe to "being" safe.

Well, Aps, what is the answer? What could they have done? I want to know because I just don't see that there was really much they could have done differently.

...had a quest who was ripping the administration for not alerting the entire campus. He said that if there'd been a tornado warning they'd have figured something out. He said if nothing else have the cops drive all over using their PA; "Stay in your dorms. There has been a shooting. We're working on it..."

To which Laura added (and I became somewhat aroused)

"...Get your guns."

Good effing Lord. Look how far we've fallen into dependency? There is danger! :jameo: What do we do? Lions and tiger and bears, oh my!? What do we DO!?

Imagine how effective the profesor that gave his life for his students would have been if he was allowed to be armed. He, and many others would still be alive. The chances are IF person's with CCW permits were allowed to carry on campus, there would have been at least one (more than likely several) people in that building carrying. I know many secretaries (peaceful little citizens that they are) that when allowed by law, carry handguns in their purses. One person carrying legally could have stopped this.. maybe not saved everyone, but even if they could have saved one.

Unfortunately, I'm not proponent of guns. I understand what you are saying. I just don't agree with it. I see potential for more problems than good.
