I had a boss in sales once when I worked in Fredericksburg, Va and sometimes we would ride together to the company which we used to finance our products in Culpepper, I think it was. Anyway, along the way on our drive, we would drive by various and sundry Civil War Monuments. A good many.

He and I were both from Ohio, but he was actually born & raised there, I was only born there, as I was a Military Brat. The point being that neither of us was "from the south".

One day he said "You know with all these monuments you see around here, you would think they had won the war". :killingme

Why is it killing you? Maybe, you should talk to William Wallace, or Rob Roy, or many numerous people in history that fought for their freedom. America is no different and never will be. We are fighting for our freedom now as we post on this forum.

Edit: Thousands of Americans have died in useless wars abroad. What is the difference? It is all political and took innocent lives. Your use of the smilie killingme was not a good choice. JMO.

LOL

I know of one in South Carolina that had a big red dildo glued to it.

Was it a statue of you? Are you ashamed of our history, and did you learn anything from it? Or, are you one that wants to erase it and make fun of it, or rewrite it? Obama probably had the most momentous chance in our history to create hope for change, but he chose to perpetuate racism. Our country is in a world of hurt. Big time. Period.

Thank you, Obama. You Rev. Wright attendee, Iran supporter, military deserter lover, Marxist believer, socialist/communist with a big chip on your shoulder for no reason, and don't forget your un-American wife! You thought you only had 4 years, but got 4 more. One lucky guy!

I think the most disgusting thing of all is that Obama used Lincoln's Bible to be sworn in. That may well be the biggest hypocrisy moment in the history of the World.

I would have to agree with this. Well said.

Not ashamed of history at all, but you have to realize that there were a large number of people then that felt the exact same way about these people in the statues as you do Obama. These men in some of these statues also took up arms against their country and actually killed Americans. I actually have a lot of respect for Robert E Lee but there were quite a few of the Confederate (and union) leaders that were the farthest thing from honorable.

They killed each other. You were North or South. Period. Do you not think that our government today is not doing the same thing? They are dictating to the States and to us (US). Do you not see that? Also, several states over the past few years have suggested they would secede. It is history repeating itself. Thanks for the discussion. It is refreshing that we are not bashing each other!

Yeah: Well Sherman was honorable when he burned and looted his way thru the South, and Benjamin Butler was honorable when he ordered his troops to treat southern women like whores.

I think we can all agree that neither side was 100% "honorable" - probably not even close. War is hell. Americans were fighting Americans and killing each other. It's definitely a dark period of our family history.

HOWEVER, one side wanted out. They didn't want to be IN the United States' Union, therefore, they had seceded so that they could go off and do their own thing. They started the whole fight. In the end, they lost.

They should have been able to move on by now. The North won. Get over it.

That how war should be, as awful as possible. I have no problem with either side doing that in acts of war. One thing Sherman did not do was commit treason.

He treated the Indians so well in the Indian wars too.

Treason? I suppose you could call millions of southerners treasonous, if you were that biased against them.
Back then people fought for what they believed.
Toady we just sit and watch as our country is slowly being given away.
We are busy arguing over a flag while Congress is giving away the store with trade agreements, and a free walk into this country for illegal immigrants and keeping us busy arguing over a piece of cloth.

Weren't we all treasonous during the Revolution?

We were to England, do they have any statues of George Washington? Do they fly any of the American revolutionary flags anywhere?

I am not biased against southerners, I share a birthplace with one of the greatest generals of the conflict (and it isn't a union general fyi).

I think it is stupid to cling onto a symbol of your failure and I am willing to admit that a very large number of those that do are saying it is for heritage etc but that is just an excuse. I have seen first hand what a confederacy "heritage" group is all about, have you ever been in one?

And ^this^

I seriously do not understand this loyalty to a Confederacy that only lasted for four years. AND one that waged war against the United States. AND was soundly defeated long before anyone on this planet was born.

This sort of thing is why Southerners have such a bad reputation and are considered ignorant rubes and rednecks. You all aren't being very good ambassadors to your home states.

Having it on a shirt or your car or whatever as a decoration is one thing; flying the actual flag as a symbol of allegiance is quite another. And if you continue, maybe the North needs to kick your ass again for you.

Well, the North has changed, the South has changed. Lables attached by you probably aren't valid. Following your logic, should there be any State flag? Live Free or Die????

I will tell you like you tell Mexicans:

If you don't want to honor the flag of this country, and want to pledge allegiance to the flag of another nation, get your ass out. This is the United States and we have ONE national flag. :patriot:

What part of that don't you understand? Be specific, please.

Just because there are extremists who want to take a mile doesn't mean the original point is invalid and the inch shouldn't be given. The Confederate flag should not be flying on government property, state or federal. The only raised flags should be the US flag and the state flag, period.

As far as removing the rebel flag from everything - clothing, decals, etc - that's ridiculous and I don't support that. However we must remember that Blacks see the Confederate flag like Jews see the swastika (because it represents pretty much the same thing) - and we certainly wouldn't wear a swastika or fly the Nazi flag as a symbol of German heritage, would we?

I am 72 years old and have never heard anyone swear an allegiance to the Confederate flag.
It is not flown to show allegiance, it is flown to show the Southern spirit.
You say get over it. Why don't you say that to the blacks. Maybe they should get over it.

Would you tell the Jewish people to get over it if there was a flag with Swastika on it flying over a government building. I mean, doesn't that just show the Nazi spirit? :coffee:
