huntr and I were approached by a panhandler in Baltimore once, outside of a hamburger joint. It was a woman asking not for money, but actually asked us to go into the restaurant and buy her 2 children one hamburger (the place sold big burgers, not Mickey D's crap). The kids were standing nearby. We were in a rush and really didn't want to go into this restaurant, so we gave her some money and went on our way.
We did, however, look back to see what she would do. She took the kids into the restaurant.
Some people truly need help. Things happen out of their control. But there are ways of going about getting help. Asking for electronic equipment that is easily auctioned on Ebay or asking for luxury items when you can't afford to buy food or pay the rent is just wrong.
When I worked for Social Services, you couldn't always tell the "deserving" poor from the undeserving, and we had to be careful to not come off as judgmental, but when folks paid their cable bill before paying the electric bill...what are they going to watch on TV if they don't have electricity? And that was many, many years ago when many places, including where I lived couldn't even get cable.
