last month we had a 15yr old girl approach us and say she was hungry and had no money and we didn't give her a dime as she looked as if she had been doing crack for a while. When we said no to her she said what the #### is wrong with you people and she said that to like 5 of us that were walking past her. When we were checking out at foodlion we mentioned it to the manager and he called the cops as she hung around the whole entire time we were there shopping. I don't know if anyone else who passed her up gave in or not though.

It is sad you think you have to resort to snide little comments, but that really shows the true inner you.

I am not sure what "..." means but since it was red I am taking it as bad.
I am not on a soap box, to be honest I would not care if that is what you think. I would never hold myself better than others, and I would not turn my back on someone that needs help.

If you can, good on you. Is that wrong? Who am I to say? But it is not right to sit in here and judge people without knowing the whole story. If you think that makes you look good, then nothing I will say will get past your ego or cold black hearts.

Well la-di-dah

Ive had the bum by sheetz on the end of GM road ask for a hot dog so many times its unreal...

Last "hand out" was a guy while I was pumping gas asked if I could spare 2 bucks for gas to make it home because he left his wallet... I pulled up filled 2 bucks into his obviously dieing truck and then he ran home.

When I have to do service calls in DC, I usually stop at a hotdog vendor buy a dozen or so Hotdogs and pass em out at the parks. I don't feel right giving out money. I've bought my fare share of meals for folks. I do my part here and there. I even sometimes feel as though I am being taken advantage of by some. I just hope what I do doesn't end up doing more harm then good.

I know. When I worked in DC there were a lot of people on the streets looking for handouts. We offered food as well. Most were happy to get it. Some walked away.

I am not a sucker for every hardship story but I am humble enough to know that people do need help sometimes. I tried to do charity work down here with SMILE and St. Andrews and it was well worth it but I wish I could do more but with the price of living nowadays it is hard. I am a big softie when it comes to kids though.

huntr and I were approached by a panhandler in Baltimore once, outside of a hamburger joint. It was a woman asking not for money, but actually asked us to go into the restaurant and buy her 2 children one hamburger (the place sold big burgers, not Mickey D's crap). The kids were standing nearby. We were in a rush and really didn't want to go into this restaurant, so we gave her some money and went on our way.

We did, however, look back to see what she would do. She took the kids into the restaurant. :yay:

Some people truly need help. Things happen out of their control. But there are ways of going about getting help. Asking for electronic equipment that is easily auctioned on Ebay or asking for luxury items when you can't afford to buy food or pay the rent is just wrong.

When I worked for Social Services, you couldn't always tell the "deserving" poor from the undeserving, and we had to be careful to not come off as judgmental, but when folks paid their cable bill before paying the electric bill...what are they going to watch on TV if they don't have electricity? And that was many, many years ago when many places, including where I lived couldn't even get cable.

I try to help when I can too. I worked in PG county for a while and the poor abused women that came in there with the children tore at me.

We did everything we could for the people that came in there. I always think to m yself what goes aorund comes around. If I do not stop and help someone that needs it one day it will come back around. God works in mysterious ways and who knows they could have been guided to you for help.

Do not let the people that abuse this stop you from helping people when you can. It does an injustice to you, them and God.

Here's hoping you get lots of new socks and underwear this Christmas...:huggy:

I miss getting socks and underwear! It did not seem fun when I was a kid but now I see the purpose. My socks are wearing thin and each week it seems I have to retire another pair to SOCKI HEAVEN.

Is it appropiate to just throw my old socks away or should I save them for sock girl. You know like saving the flags for the boy scouts to burn on flag day?:killingme

give to the kid who lost his family

There was a 13 year old kid from montgomery county who lost his mother, grandmother, and 5 year old brother in a tragic fire. i can't imagine what kind of christmas he will have, but on WUSA website there is a link where the local pta set up a fund to help him, not only with needs, but to have a great christmas. all he has was the clothes on his back when he was rescued from the fire.
