105 are now in intensive care in Italy, that is about 10% of total infected. No health care system in the world has enough beds to sustain this type of care

What percentage is it of the population of Italy?

Are you trying to say that in the whole country of Italy they cannot accommodate 105 people in intensive care? Really? Are you seriously saying that?

29 dead. Do you know how many Italians die every day normally?

There are approx 7200 ICU beds in Italy:

So assuming all 7200 beds are open (which we know isn’t the case, but I can’t find any figures describing typical usage rates), it would require an infection rate of 72,000 if the current rate of serious complications hold.

there are 60,000,000 people in Italy, that’s an infection rate of only 0.1% before all existing beds are used.

Approx 1,725 Italians die each day

my point is that the infection rate is increasing, not stabilized, it seems to only to have stabilized in Asian areas like Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Wuhan province.

my issue isn’t my worry about dropping dead from this thing, it’s how society reacts when hospitals are at capacity and schools are closed for two weeks. Look how we respond to a snowstorm? Stores are picked clean...I just don’t know what a lot of irrational people are about to do.
Guess we watch to see how things evolve in Washington state, which looks to be our hotspot,

Hospitals reach capacity due to the flu and it doesn't make news. When folks make a run on the stores and empty the shelves they are only empty until the next trucks is arrive.

And my point is that this is a media manufactured bullshit hysteria. More people will die of the common boring flu in 2020 than coronavirus, yet nobody gives a sh^t and you have to ask yourself why.

Why do you think those store pickers are irrational and freaking out?

Why do you think the media is pushing the hysteria?

But Kwillia! We're all going to die of coronavirus, didn't you hear? It's a pandemic! It could wipe out the whole human population!

Well since paraquat didn't work in the 70's maybe this will work now. Imagine a would of no dopers or homeless on the street. :)

And my point is the media has nothing to do with how China, Japan, Iran, have responded.

I get your position , this isn’t something to be concerned about. I disagree, for some reason China quarantined 14million people, all air traffic to China has stopped, and Disney world has closed Hong Kong and now Tokyo Disney. These are companies who have to answer to shareholders, not the media.
This is not the reaction that with previous flu’s, there is a reason for this intense reaction, which the Chinese lead, and I don’t believe it’s the American Media.

Panic is irrational and ineffective. Are we the shelter in place until the world gets a clean bill of health? That's not reasonable and that isn't expected.

What makes me SMDH is the media making it sound like the government is supposed to stop us from catching the virus. That is irrational. All they can do is offer advice. They can't make us wash our hands or avoid large crowds. They sure as heck can't stop those that are infected from entering our country.

Ok, guess we have no reason to worry then, there will always be a new truck on the way.

One of the things I don’t understand about a lot of the people who post here, they seem to really distrust the media, think they over react, etc etc....but always seem to know everything the media is discussing. Is it some weird form of masochism? It’s like listening to music you hate and then b*tching about how much you hate it. Turn off the tv, get offline.

the vast vast majority of people out there don’t pay this close attention to what the media reports.

You totally missed my point. I didnt say nor to worry or to act as if there isn't a chance of it spreading. I said panicking is futile and we are each responsible for taking precautions and preparations.

I am always surfing the net for news. And because what is reported in the media is selective and manipulated, I do not just read news from the US.

That's an interesting observation. Thank you.

But I wonder..., is it possible that in two of the cases (i.e., China and Iran) the lack of media coverage has made the problem worse. Could it be that China's notoriously censored press (so that the Chinese Communist Party never looks bad) allowed the coronavirus to get out of the country and into Japan, South Korea, Iran, etc. because it was not reported; so these other nations were not prepared for what was already "in-country"? Is it possible that a similar dynamic took place in Iran causing the problems we are now seeing there?

Of course, what is under-reported in authoritarian countries gets "over-reported" in the Western press (thus giving us the impression that the Black Death has returned).

I remain convinced that this virus will burn out at some point over the next few months with a death rate no greater than other flu "epidemics." The objection to this view is that COVID-19 appears to have a death rate closer to SARS than to the common flu. That wouldn't be good in one respect (i.e., more initial deaths), but it may turn out to be good in the long run (i.e., its virulence causes it to burn out relatively quickly).

And there's good news regarding one of the virus' supposed super powers: re-infection. It may be that folks show as being re-infected after testing negative is a result of the tests being used and/or a longer time period required for the body to dump the virus load.

I admit to being concerned because I am in several of the high risk categories. Having said that, while I may be concerned for me I'm far less concerned for the general population.

Who knows? We'll see. Best defense: wash hands.
