What kind of dog is this? She was dumped!

This sweet girl needs to be placed or go to another Foster as the current Foster can not keep her. She has started barking at an older male family member there (she is probably picking up the vibe that he doesn't want her there). Consequently she ends up crated more than she should be, but it's been cold, what do you do?

PS this girl is small but very strong. The average adult could handle her strength but I wouldn't hand her leash over to a child unless it was a strong child

Lulu is still available for adoption. Spayed, all shots, and all health tests - neg. for heart-worms and on preventative. She has learned not to jump up on people and she just wags her tail for you and is such a happy girl!

Lots of people want puppies but I don't. I can do without the housebreaking training and the messes to clean up. This girl is about 3 years old and very loving. Never had a potty incident in the house either. She has so much love to give. All she wants is to be with you and kiss you.

I love Rotties. Why don't you contact Cindy at Roxie's Fund. That's where I adopted my last rescue Rottie named Quinn (rest in peace baby).

Roxie's Fund

Cindy is a very goodhearted person and they pull many of the Rotties from shelters in the area, and they get give-ups too.

Thanks for the site.

I'm one of those people who do want a puppy. I'm not looking to adopt a young/older dog, just a pup. :buddies:

OK great then you know what you're in for <G>. I could be persuaded one day to accept a Rottie Pup - we'll see. I have a show Rottie connection that may let me have one in the future ... If you hear of someone willing to take an adult just send them our way and if we don't have what they want, we can steer them to other rescues/shelters.

Post a picture of your pup when you get one. Puppies are so cute!

Oh I definitely know what I'm in for. Not my first rodeo. :buddies: I'll definitely post pics when I get one!

Quick tip for keeping messes down - If you don't give the pups as much water, they won't pee as much!

(kidding. Don't go rambo on me lol)

Update: Well Miss Lulu had been to the vet last December to get vaccinations and tests. She tested negative at that time for Heartworms (HW) so was put on 6 months of HW preventative. She went to the vet yesterday for another test and was positive Now she is staying at the vet's office the rest of the week while they administer toxic doses of medications that require she be monitored closely. The estimate for the treatment is $500-$2,000 depending on a variety of factors.

Is this a common practice for the vet to hold the dog for a few days to monitor treatment? I never had a dog that was positive for HW before, and having only helped with a few dogs so far with adoptions, this is my 1st dog adoptable dog case of HW. I am sure there a lot of dogs out there with HW that probably get put down due to the cost of treatment.

The treatment is very invasive and extremely hard on the dog. They should be confined with limited activity. My guess is that the vet wants to make sure the dog is okay after the procedure before it goes home.

How very sad. I hope Lulu will be okay. :frown:

As you stated the treatment for getting rid of heartworms is to poison the dog. They have to give enough poison to wipe out the worms but not enough that would kill the dog. The other high risk is the dead worms will be floating about in the body and bloodstream. As a result, the dog could drop dead at any moment until they've cleared. The dog also must be kept fairly inactive as any extrenuous activity could result in immediate death.

I would look at another vet....

if she tested negative first... placed on HW meds and now tested Positive...

it doesnt make sense...... I doubt she is FULL BLOWN HW ..... what they may have seen is the microfilaria in the blood.... if she was Full Blown HW positive before they would have seen this.

there are vets that will treat dogs with HW with the medication vs doing the injections. This depends on the severity of the HW.... and 6 months from neg to pos ...is not strong enough .....

true!

this is an intense treatment.....

there are several injections that need to be made over time..... the body has to rid the dead worms by filtering them thru the bloodstream, kidneys and liver ... ALONG WITH THE CHEMICALS. All of this happens slow and over days and months.

the dogs must stay crated and inactive for 6 months to a year depending on how bad the HW were.

yep.... the dog could die from this as well......

The only way they can keep LuLu inactive is to sedate her. She bounces off the walls all the time unless she is sitting in her favorite chaise lounge.

I am getting scared for her after reading this. She is incapable of being low key. She is super hyper off/on during the day. If we let her run and play she will be sort of low key a while. Or if she's in her favorite chair she relaxes.

I am starting to think that she may not make it through the treatment?

why would you think that.... its up to you to keep her crated...leash walk... give her frozen filled kong to keep her active...

OR SEE ANOTHER VET FOR A 2ND OPINION!!!!

See... this is a perfect example of why I believe that it is cruel and selfish for us to put animals through invasive treatments. We do it so that they can stay alive for us and to make us feel like we are doing them a favor, but to me I see an animal that just knows they are being tortured and they feel bad having gone through treatments that make them feel very sick or lots of pain and they often die anyway even after the best intentions of the vet.

If someone wants to do this to their pet so be it... each to their own, but they have no right nor business looking down their nose at someone who choses NOT to do this to their pet and decides to put them down humanely instead.
