What kind of dog is this? She was dumped!

See... this is a perfect example of why I believe that it is cruel and selfish for us to put animals through invasive treatments. We do it so that they can stay alive for us and to make us feel like we are doing them a favor, but to me I see an animal that just knows they are being tortured and they feel bad having gone through treatments that make them feel very sick or lots of pain and they often die anyway even after the best intentions of the vet.

If someone wants to do this to their pet so be it... each to their own, but they have no right nor business looking down their nose at someone who choses NOT to do this to their pet and decides to put them down humanely instead.

BUTTTTTTTT....... what if another vets says.... Lets just keep her on HW meds and recheck in a few months...

It's too late for that... sounds like the dog has already been once again loaded with poison.

I'm all for a 2nd opinion as I have this unnerving feeling that lot$ of vet$ are eager to do inva$ve treatment$.

why would you think that.... its up to you to keep her crated...leash walk... give her frozen filled kong to keep her active...

OR SEE ANOTHER VET FOR A 2ND OPINION!!!!

OK you hit on something .... I need to know ways we can keep her actively inactive. The Kong - okay I'll go buy one. What else? She has powerful jaws and is able to rip apart just about any toy/chewie she has been given. So I need to give her tough things that can withstand the jaws of a part pit dog (my Rottie's could tear up a large $20 Nylabone).

OOHH HELLLLLLZZZZ NO!!!

Im glad i have over 20yrs vet experiance.... i comes in handy for thing like this.

If my dog tested neg...... then put on meds.... then tested POS.....

the tests DO NOT PICK UP FULL HEARTWORMS.... they pick up the microfliaria in the blood.... you will NOT have FULL HW without having the MF in the blood.

it takes over 6months for the MF to MAKE it to the heart and START to form as HW...

I think some vet saw her coming and bamboozled her with some BS.... and her checkbook also..

This is why i love my vet... HE WOULD NEVER DO SUCH A THING!!!!

:smack:....HER BREED HAS NOTHING DO WITH WITH IT.....

my Bloodhound will demolish things in less than a few hours.... and i DO NOT think of his jaws a strong...

try a marrow bone...... the ones with a whole thru the middle... same thing.... fill with peanut butter treats..... mashed taters and treats.... yogurt and treats.... and freeze!!!

I was raised in a family that took in strays and were also always fostering animals. That part of who I am has always envisioned me eventually becoming a home rescuing older dogs that belong to owners that must find new homes for them.

It is because of my non-faith in vets that I've chosen NOT to take in anymore dogs once the two I have are gone. I refuse to take on dependents that will require me to deal with humans I do not trust.

The foster has been caring for the dog (and paying for the care), and the foster made the decision to leave the dog with the vet for the treatment. I was told about it later in the day yesterday. I will get more details about why the decision was made by the vet to go forward with this treatment. Maybe I misunderstood something that was said to me? I was having trouble with the reception on the call, so maybe I didn't hear everything clearly. I will clarify the details later today.

If they are using toxic chemicals and feel she needs to be kept inactive for a long time, we could have told them that there is little chance a dog as active as she is would be a good candidate for this type of treatment.

Um excuse me but breed DOES have something to do with bite pressure, which in turn has something to do with what they can and can not easily tear up. I am sure that the beagle we had was not capable of tearing apart an item with the quickness that my old Rottie gal could.

I also think the bigger the dog/mouth, the more surface area they can cover to chew with, which can make a difference also.

This doesn't make sense. If you wish to treat her for HW, you CAN confine her to a small room or a crate. If she's not a good candidate as you say, she'll eventually die from the HWs. I like what iCit suggested by getting a second opinion. It really doesn't make sense that she would be diagnosed with HW after a negative, especially while on meds.

I need to research into HW so I can approach this with some knowledge about it and not just what the vet says. If anyone here knows of any reliable URLS for HW info. please pass it on, because unlike some people, I KNOW everything on the internet isn't good/factual information LOL

update

Lulu survived the heartworm treatment and she is doing great! We were hopeful about her being adopted but the family that was interested is going through cancer treatments to the Mom of the household and they said it isn't a good time to take her on and we agree.

Lulu has a lot of energy so a large fenced yard would be best for her. She loves to give kisses and she can be a bit mouthy in playing. We have discouraged her from using her mouth to play and grab at humans because although she is playing, she can be a little rough sometimes.

Lulu is a joy to have around. She is always happy, gets along with dogs, cats, kids, and has picked her favorite chair in the foster's home. When she gets tired you'll find her there taking a nap.

Well, if she was...dumped...I'm thinking she's a...

...poo dle.

LOL - she has no idea just how lucky she was that day when the person stopped and shoved her out of the car. Her life is so much better now. Then again ... maybe she DOES know? Maybe that's why she is happy all the time .

She's a handful as far as being strong and full of energy. I wouldn't recommend her around small children due to the possibility she may accidentally knock them over. She's such an excitable girl and I bet she'd love having another dog to play with. The resident dog at the foster home isn't playful, so Lulu doesn't have a playmate there.
