When are groceries supposed to get prohibitively expensive?

Most of the kids I went to high school with entered a trade or went into the military on graduation. They appear to be doing just as well as the kids who went to college.

College being what you MUST do started around the time my kids were growing up (in MD). I don't remember it being a huge deal when I was a kid, depending on what you wanted to do as a career. If you wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer or something that required a degree, sure, but it didn't require a degree to be a, say, hotel manager or work for the Dept Revenue. You started as a desk person and worked your way up, OJT. Now they want you to have a degree for even entry level stuff.
I graduated high school in 92, my teachers all talked like it was something that you just had to do or else.

I did come from a pretty affluent high school, many of my classmates dads were doctors, lawyers, or accountants.

Oh good, so I'm not crazy. In that other egg thread where you all were talking about how much you're paying for a dozen eggs I made a specific point to note what a Walmart brand dozen costs here and it was significantly cheaper than what you all were paying.

My grocery bill in general has gone down about $25/week in the last couple months.
Yea, I saw the eggs and was like "when did this happen, guess its been a couple weeks since I bought eggs" then tonight I went to Walmart and thought WTF.

The damn ground beef seems to have gone up above $10/lb too.

Sams........ 9 or 10 lbs ground round tube about 42 bucks. I make 9 or 10 packages out of it, easy peasy.

I put frozen stuff in a pot on the stove and bring it up to 90-100* or so. 1 lb of ground beef is ready in less than 30 min, a small roast in about an hour.

I doubt they would deign to enter your RV but these restaurants that are being raided are not where the people who clean toilets are working.

The restaurant industry and the food supply chain as well as construction will all be the hardest hit since Americans aren't willing to do those jobs.

If they do convince American's to take these jobs the wages will be raised and then the cost of goods. It's pretty easy to see whats coming.
Years ago I worked construction as a bricklayer. Made a good middle class income that supported a family. Then came the illegals who worked for less than half what we were being paid. Guess what happened to the legally present workers? The only place employers still wanted legal workers were government jobs where you had to prove residency.

Annual Inflation Rate Hits Four-Year Low; Groceries Have Biggest Decline in Five Years

JUST IN: US inflation fell to 2.3% in April, the lowest since 2021.

Inside that number, there was more good news. Gasoline prices decreased for the third straight month. At home food fell by 0.4 percent, or twice the rate of inflation. Eggs were down 17.7 percent since March, while pork and beef ran at or slightly behind inflation. Overall, grocery prices had their largest decline in nearly five years. (Funny how so many economic failures begin with Joe Biden's inauguration, isn't it?)

But...but... the effects of the tariffs have not being felt yet says all the big economists!!! :cds:

My god you are fu*k*n stupid, with the trend now of kids questioning the value of college and student loans more and more of them will take to the trades and food service. I get questions at least a couple times a week from parents or kids wanting to know how I got into the electrical trade and if I can help them get started in the right direction, or some of the other trades steamfitting, plumbing, HVAC, bricklaying, carpentry etc.
I heard on the radio the other day, some trade school had just graduated approx. 25-30 students from their welding program. All had job offers starting at over $50K.

I like hearing that because we need truckers and welders and electricians and plumbers and construction workers etc etc. What we don't need are more lawyers and journalists.

...not too sure but didn't Trump sign an EO that truckers need to be able to read/speak english to receive/retain commercial driving license?
