Why are you here?

Back to the topic...

I had heard about the forums over 3 years ago when a lady I worked near ranted about posting on it and the replies she was getting. I had looked at it briefly then, but promptly forgot about it. After 9/11, I was at home and checked it out again. I was impressed with the chats and discussions. I like the diversity of the individuals here and the points of view from a wide range of backgrounds.

I have never paid close attention to politics or world events, but by reading the differing viewpoints, I'm getting quite an education. I find it rather fascinating to see how our world works and to see the opposing viewpoints from my own.

Hey, I never started that thread, I just gave some friendly advice. Who was it that started the Feral Cat string any how and where are they now?

I think that might have been our first flame war - we had people wanting to call the cops and all kinds of stuff. :roflmao: And the funniest part was that Ken didn't even do anything but he took the blame for it!
:roflmao:

Okay, I admit it...

Yes, I met someone on the Internet. :blushing:

I went online looking for people who went to school where I was going to college. I was still in high school, and met this guy who was a freshman in college. I thought how cool it would be to go to college already dating a college boy, so we got pretty serious (phone calls, visits, he even went to my prom).

Anyways, so fast forward to a year and a half later. We actually got engaged (worse mistake of my life)!!!!!!!!!!! :boo:

I was a sophomore in college and stopped and realized that:
1) I was in love with the thought of being in love.
2) The REAL fiance (not the one online) was a pain in the $ss and thought only about himself (and he was cheap).
3) I had not taken the time to figure out who *I* was (especially who I was offline), so how in the world could I be engaged to this idiot?

There were other issues that I will not drag through the dirt again, but let's just say I came to my senses and ditched the online flame!

So, I for one say yes, being online for extensive periods of time can become an addiction, and yes, it can obscure reality (my picture of the perfect boyfriend wasn't so perfect once I met him and hung out with him in real life).

My advice: you never know the real person until you actually meet the real person. And there should be no keyboards and computer screens involved.

Great Post Olive! You are so right! How easy it is to get or give the wrong impression on line. Every single entry can be well thought out ahead of time so what's the point? Your a genius! Love It!

I'm trying to set a new record for how many MPDs I can create and have banned  just jokes!

(coming into this late so bear with me cause I'm not reading 9 pages of posts).

I came on here out of curiosity. I'd never been on a forum before. I did the 'chat room' thing years ago from time to time on AOL, but they're just full of kids/idiots. I actually use to check out the classifieds for real estate and antique furniture or whatever on here (Tater told me about them). I saw the "Forums" link, and clicked. I had no expectations for anything in particular, but I know it wasn't to try to find a date cause I was dating Tater at the time for about a year.

I wasn't hooked like a crack addict until after I met most of the people in person at Christy's shin-dig last spring. The way I see it, it's like getting to share in the day of some of my friends all day or have lunch with them, if that makes sense. Honestly, I am not seeking any sort of affair or relationship other than friendship with anyone on here. Tater complains enough that I barely have time for him!

I have always been here --

I first came on here about 6 or 7 years ago - I'd moved here recently, got put on furlough by the government for a few weeks, and decided to poke around on the Net to see if there was anything local down here. I found SOMD, and started posting as "Frank" as kind of a pun - I think I'm frank with what I think and say, and back then, most people posted with their real names, because there only were about a dozen of us. I guess I wanted what most people want - chat, make friends, find out what there is to do around here. We even made a go of trying to meet people online back then - I think it was Christy who was the first person to try anything like that - and that was pretty daring, considering that she had never met any of the folks online at that point.

And I have stuck around, largely because I do want to keep up with a few people, and to know what is going on. Most of the time, if it has anything to do with something local, I can get an answer here MUCH faster than any other source, if at all.

Now that I'm done reading through ten pages, I can finally tell you how I stumbled across this site.

I used to scan the classifieds for rental properties and such. I tuned into the forums on occasion, but thought they were...well, boring! One day in October, 2001, I got the brilliant idea to sign-on and rampage through like a tornado! My obnoxious posts (the first 2 days) more than worked...everyone had their panties/boxers/briefs bunched. :bubble:

I made nice after two days (said Sharon) and from then, I've been posting as SxyPrincess.

My first time meeting some of you was at Christy & Steve's Shin-dig in the summer of 2002.

I talk to several of you on a regular basis, and have occasional outings with some, also.

You guys and girls are a great bunch of people and I luv ya all!
