Why Do Cops Bother?

In another thread somebody was talking about the new Chargers the cops have that are capable of 150+... I do NOT want any cop in this county to EVER be driving that fast.. and thought there were rules in place that they weren't allowed, or someone had to authorize them to get into a high speed chase.. aren't they routinely called at speeds in excess of 80 - 85??

Of course we are talking about high speed chases where you are trying to capture a felon, running to catch up to a speeder they caught doing 85 they have to exceed 100 by a good amount.

My point being, if they aren't allowed to chase someone at speeds higher than 85 - 90 or 95.. and anything above 100 is considered reckless and stupid no matter who is behind the wheel.. WHY did they buy cars that can exceed 150??

Yea and I saw one of Calvert's Chargers, it was smashed up in the front and had duct tape holding in the head light, guess he was chasing someone over 80 mph? :yikes:

Already??

Give a kid a nice toy to play with, and they have to go screw it up..

Do have to wonder what he was doing with it when he wrecked it..

Bad thing about these guys is they are being chased because they were speeding to begin with endangering the lives of others. All it takes is one innocent driver to make a simple mistake and they get a crotch rocket up the wazoo. Or even a distracted parent with their kids. there are a million scenarios but not a single reason to be flying up the road at over a hundred. You could be the best rider on the planet until murphy gets ahold of your handle bars.

I ride too so not slamming bikers.

That's what I mean, why kill the guy or an innocent bystander, just for speeding? I'm not taking up for the idiots that the cops are chasing, but if the cops don't chase them, they will probably slow down.

...who is doing the killing? That sentence implies that it is the cops and it is absolutely not their fault or responsibility if someone is going that fast and refuses to stop and kills themselves or someone else. It's the bikers fault, 100%.

I agree with you on that. When I'm listening to the chases they start out at 70-80 or so, not until the cop starts after them does the speed go up into the 100s. I just think the cop should get his plate number and pay him a visit.

...but how easy is that, getting a plate, when you're driving 70-80 mph?

I mean, yeah, the high speed chase and carnage make me sick and I think people that cause that ought to be severely punished. It's no much different than me running outside with my guns and shooting bullets in the air; some one may well get hurt.

So, maybe by chasing they do get close enough to get an ID? Maybe better cameras would enable them to zoom in at speed and get details good enough for prosecution?

Something interesting I heard on news the other and I think it's total BS and can't be done, but they are talking about making "sports bikes" illegal. I'd love to see them try that.

...that's absurd; there is yet to be the motorcycle built that has sped off, all by itself, from the cops. I just don't understand where this mindset comes from! Guns, tobacco, now motorcycles???

SO they make sport bikes illegal.. than they do what Kawasaki did.. put the ZX-14 (1400CC) engine in a "touring bike", and call it a Concours-14...

But lawmakers scare me, the same people that outlawed three wheel ATV's because parents couldn't be trusted to keep their 10 year olds off of them..

Look at the difference between playgrounds we had when we were kids to the ones they are building for kids today.. Monkey Bars?? Tall Slides.. Don't think you even find swings more than 6 feet tall (if you find them at all)

Anything they determine to be bad for you, or not beneficial to your self esteem they'll regulate or make illegal if given the chance.

It will continue until the 100 MPH + speeders are too scared to do it anymore. Bikes have tiny licence plates, hard to read going that fast. Like Bob said chasing them that fast is foolish for all involved. Both the bikes and the cop cars are capable of high speeds but the roads are not designed for it and they are congested with cars. What is a long sweeping curve going 65 looks like a hairpin at 140. Add in a couple slow moving obstacles and you have disaster.

High powered dash mounted cameras, get the pic of the plate with the speed super imposed on the frame and pick them up later. The legislature and judges are where the deterrence comes in. If you flee from the cops over 80MPH, you lose your licence for 5 years...PERIOD, automatic, end of story. In 5 years they have to buy a $500,000 bond to get insurance to get the licence back.

When the population starts getting speckled with walkers because they can't drive and they can demonstrate the pain that causes it might work. Problem is all the compassionate types who cry about poor Johnny who can't work because he can't drive, go easy on them pleasssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeee, he just made a mistake :bawl: Too effing bad. Fleeing the police at 100 MPH is NOT a mistake, it takes conscious thought.

Perhaps some type of mandatory transponder which could be activated or read by police car in the event the biker decides to run and this way he doesn't have to chase. Can just visit them and deliver or mail him/her the ticket.

We could make crotch rockets illegal for idiots who are under 25. We could make laws and rules up all freaking day long and none would work.

Perhaps make the fines harsher for speeders. How about and instant 10 points for anything over 90 followed by 6 years of holding on to the points vice the usual 3.

Perhaps an encrypted radio activated kill switch. Cop gives chase and activates it shutting down the fleeing persons engine.

I could see potential problems thought. You kill a runners engine and they wipe out or get run over by a truck.

Or maybe a deal that would shut down bike so it could only reach certain speeds making it controllable but not fast enough to get away. Would work easy with the fuel injected bikes. You could make it mandatory or make it so insurance companies triple their premiums for not having it.

I am not out to screw the biker. Just the idiots that don't respect the road and the good folks driving on them. I freaking hate to pay for the losers mistake!!!

Um, the chase probably began because they were speeding in the first place.

Why not just a governor that only allows a max speed of 75

That would screw the weekend road racer or guy or who goes to MIR legally to race there. Wouldn't want that. That's like telling gun owners they can only have .22 caliber weapons. That would suck.

Finishing last
Give the police authority to use deadly force!

Let's see speeder VS sniper, the speeder would have a sporting chance.

At least 15 people, including two police officers, were transported to local hospitals after the crash.

Police told News4's Derrick Ward that the crash happened at about 7 p.m. on the Beltway as a Prince George's County officer in a cruiser was chasing a motorcycle. Police told News4 that the motorcycle cut off a pickup truck, and the officer's cruiser then collided with the pickup.
