Why would a biker do this?

Ran into a frien of mine Saturday, Navy guy that got transferred to Norfolk . He wa on a new Triumph Bonniville. Had a novelty skid lid and was wearing sandels. I chewed him out for both.
He won't be able to get on base like that.

The law says that you must wear a helmet, it does not say where you have to place it. You could strap it to your leg if you want, you "are wearing a helmet". Have a friend that rides like this and has had several tickets, but it is always thrown out of court, "as he was wearing a helmet" as the law requires.
The law(s) of physics say I'll be better off when (not if) I slide down the street if I've got my head wrapped in a hard plastic shell.

He still had the temp tags on the bike, doubt if he's riding on base yet.

Actually, he might be able to as long as he's got on a reflective vest

Pa. has a no helmet law and I wouldn't even ride there without a helmet.

:yeahthat:

20 years ago I'd ride with a helmet, but I'd ride with shorts, and t-shirt.. Now I look at people dressed like that and wonder what the h they are thinking? Especially when they have a young-un on the back with a peanut shell helmet, shorts t-shirt (not that a long sleeve shirt is going to make a difference), and flip flops.. I've seen them as young as five or six....

It's one thing to dress like that as an adult.. but to dress a kid like that??

LOL. Saw a guy on a cruiser today riding in shorts and sandals! I thought that was a sport bike thing!

On a positive note, I got the yellow mesh jacket the other day. It is a lot cooler (temperature wise) than I thought it would be. I know I have to be more visible now!

Was it the Olympia??

If I remember I rode once up in PA without a helmet. Couldn't have been that great cause I barely remember it. Sometimes I feel naked wearing my 1/4 helmet.

I must be getting old I think more about the what ifs, then the what do I look like.
I tried to wear one of those peanut shell helmets, and it was too noisy, and it felt like the wind was trying to tear my head off.. NOT comfortable..

But of course I'm not pushing a barn door down the road either.. like being in the wind.

Only do it occasionally for the half mile between my house and the grocery store, all residential, 25mph speed limit.

With the wind blowing thru your hair, it feel soooo good, like getting a head massage
Owner of a Daytona Bike shop was killed in the parking lot of his dealership, when riding without a helmet he had a one-in-a-million incident where he stumbled <10mph, hit his head on the curb and died..

Riding without a helmet is one of the dumbest things you can do. It shows absolutely stupidity. Why is it illegal? Aren't we polluting the gene pool by trying to stop stupid people from killing themselves?

I say helmet law for <18, then let the brains spill.

I pretty much agree with that, or maybe the first year after getting the license. After that, if you want to be stupid, go for it. Most of the time I would wear a helmet, but it all depends on where I would be riding. What if you lived out in the country and rode over to your buddies house? One mile away, country or farm road, no traffic.

Helmets DO make a difference, they can turn a fatal accident into a minor accident.. or a lack of a helmet can turn a "Minor scrapes and bruises" into a fatality. AND the chances are, someday, if you ride you are going to have a minor crash, a low side, high side or impact.. Do you want to walk away, or be carried away?

These are pictures from a motorcycle accident last week on Highway 169 here in Tulsa. The guy was going over 125 mph around 2 am when he hit the back of the Roadway truck. The truck was going normal speed and did not know what had happened. He was drug approx a mile before the truck stopped. Highway 169 is known for late night speed driving and trick driving of motorcycles. This guy's friend was killed 1 week before this on his motorcycle going 120+ on Highway 169... Steed.

NOTHING could have helped this guy, if he was in a car it would have been a fatal..

Not to mention, it contained the brain matter v. exploding it all over the place. I mean, really. :eek:pencasket:

LOL! Well, no. Base requires a "brightly colored outer garment", whatever that is. Also hard-soled shoes, long pants, long-sleeved shirt, full gloves, DOT helmet and eye protection. Which is why I hate riding to work in July!

Wonder if my silver mesh jacket would qualify?
Since the DOT sticker is on the back, who's gonna know. I've printed little DOT lables for folks to glue on the back of their helmet
I wear the "duty" boots with the heavy nylon uppers. They have a sole similar to a pair of tennis shoes, very comfy and the wind blows thrug the uppers. Think they provide a lot more protection than a pair of leather soled lofers.

SOOOoooo happy to not be working there anymore. This place couldn't care less. I DO wear a helmet even though the law doesn't require it as Vince has stated. FUnny...MOST of the helmetless folks that I see around here are under the age of 25. There are the occasional grey haired ones, but definitely a majority of the assumingly experienced riders here wear DOT helmets.

Headed to work in this heat...ankle sox, approved "business casual" work shoes, collared shirt and helmet. That's it. AHHHhhhhhhhhhh.
