I went to Staples the other day to buy a data cable so I could try to pull my files from my old PC to another one (couldn't login to my admin profile) so Will says if the problm is what he thinks it is, bring it in and for $69 he'll fix it. If he can't fix it he can copy the files for me for $69. Okay I understand they need to make money, but I am scraping to feed and provide litter and meds for 12 kitties that are waiting to be adopted so I don't have $69 to pay. Now what could he possibly know that none of us thought of already to try?

The data cable was $40 so I left without it. I hate to do it but I am going to have to take my PC to work to ask one of the techie people there to help me. Waaaa. In the meantime I am trying to figure out Win 8.1 .... :frown:

Seriously? I thought I saw one on the dell site for about $20.

wow I'm not even sure I can copy the files from PC to PC, but I was going to try. It's been several months now since I could login to my admin profile, and I am getting desperate to access those files. One of the files I need is the non-profit application for the rescue. It's really frustrating that many of the PC issues we have are a result of butt-heads who create viruses and malware to mess up anyone they can. I just don't understand how people like that can survive while we lose good people ..... I just don't get it.

Did you go into Safe Mode to try and retrieve the file and change the administrator settings?

Yes I did. I wasn't able to get anything done. Are you offering your help on this?

I'd be happy to meet you at Panera Bread in my yoga pants to see if you can help. I'd even be willing to buy you a hot beverage and a cookie/danish.

I had already spent many hours filling out that form so I really do not want to have to redo the whole thing. It's not just a 10 page app. It is 31 pages long and requires a multitude of attachments to be drafted and attached.

Have you searched for the form via the Windows Explorer? If you know the file name you should be able to find and access it.

One last suggestion and then I'll quit. Have you tried using the Command Prompt and renaming/moving/copying the file into the current user account?

not sure I would know the correct whole file name/path to do that, and I have a dozen or so files related to that app.

I've been using Windows 8.1 for about a month now on a couple of machines, and have it nicely configured to resemble the Win7 way of doing things. The switch between the tiles/apps and the regular desktop is not nearly as jarring if you have it set up to mostly resemble the old way of doing things.

Microsoft configured it to favor the new stuff too much. For a desktop or non-touchscreen laptop, it doesn't make sense - too many mental transitions to make to use it. If you've used Linux, you will know the feeling.

Okay, I've updated to 8.1, and I don't see much difference. I have figured out how to do a few things that resemble Win7, but I guess I'm still missing some things I regularly depended on. I guess it'll take more than an afternoon of goofing around to get it the way I want it. But I keep thinking that if I'm setting it up to be like Win7, what am I missing by not using it the way it has been built?
Upside: I downloaded the Project Spark beta that can only be played with 8.1

Hate Windows 8? You are not doomed

" PHOENIX, Ariz. - Jim asks: I've grown to hate (Windows 8) and would like to install Win 7. What steps should I take?

This is a very common sentiment that is understandable because of the radical departure that Microsoft took with its newest user interface.

If you hate Windows 8 because of how it works, I'd highly recommend that you try a free program that can make Windows 8 look and work a lot more like older versions of Windows before you go through the extreme hassle involved in starting over. "
