Window 8 Comments Please

Vince

......
You have a start button but it doesnt bring up programs, documents, etc like the older windows. Stick with 7 vince.
I thought the newer computers had mother boards with chipsets that were set up to accept Windows 8. I will have to do more research into this before I buy a new computer with Windows 8. One of my guys at work is a computer geek.

humm, I will have to check that out the next time I'm in front of that PC.

It is in the upper right hand corner. Hover over the 3 little lines at the end of the address bar and it says customize and control Google Chrome.

I have never met an instantiation of Windows 8 that I liked. I have had to correct problems with computers running that OS, and although I was able to figure out how to do what was needed, it was a labor-intensive interface when correcting problems, and the problems themselves struck me as things which didn't happen with earlier OSs, and definitely never happen in the Linux OS.

Thanks, wouldn't have thought to click that and it did open to full screen.

Railroad,

I'm getting around in Windows 8 just fine but I'm the kind of person who looks at new technology as a challenge. I like the touch screen more and more as I go along. I prefer the stability of Windows 7 although I do seem to be more stable with the latest Windows 8 update.

Ass-hole
Even with 8.1, it's still difficult to maneuver. My friend got one and I helped him set it up, my first exposure to 8.1. Took a while to figure it out. But one comment was made that i really agree with: if it's win 8, get a touch screen or external mouse. The trackpad just doesn't cut it.

One thing you can do to make Desktop stuff work easier is to right-click on the Desktop icon and select 'add to start menu' or something similar. It will then appear as one of the Start Screen icons. Clicking on it switches to Desktop mode and runs the app.

My laptop is not a touch screen, so I have slowly added more stuff to my desktop over time. :yay:

Was using an external mouse on day 2 on Win 8 - I was doing the same with my old Dell.

downgrade?

downgrade (vs. upgrade) to an earlier OS like Win 7 I believe - if so I'd like that also because I do not like Win 8 yet at all. Win 8 MUST be a problem because our work IT folks are just now putting Win 7 on our computers, and not Win 8, so it must be a PITA?

This is your captain!
I've been using Windows 8.1 for about a month now on a couple of machines, and have it nicely configured to resemble the Win7 way of doing things. The switch between the tiles/apps and the regular desktop is not nearly as jarring if you have it set up to mostly resemble the old way of doing things.

Microsoft configured it to favor the new stuff too much. For a desktop or non-touchscreen laptop, it doesn't make sense - too many mental transitions to make to use it. If you've used Linux, you will know the feeling.

I am told that Windows 8.1 put back in all the stuff that you were comfortable with in Windows 7. Start button, etc. Haven't tried it yet myself, but I am looking at getting a new computer so I guess I'll find out.

Thanks Vince! I didn't know that. My laptop keeps asking me if I want to upgrade to 8.1. Click icon for update. I was too afraid to. I hate Windows 8 and don't have a touch screen, why in the world would I want to upgrade now to an 8.1  Hell no! :lmao: Good to know that things wont get worse but better with the update!! :yay: Now I will patiently wait for it to ask me again then upgrade!

downgrade?

under Licensing Rules - you have the right to downgrade to Windows 3.1 if you think it will run

most companies revert to the previous edition of windows -this is how Dell / HP continued selling XP - it was a Vista license with downgrade rights *

once windows 7 is NLA to OEM's, the OEM;'s then will have to purchase windows 8 licenses or COA and they downgrade the computers also long as MS makes the 'OEM' Media available

*side note - this is also how Microsoft claims HUGE Sales in the 'latest' Operating System - the sales figures are not split between Windows 8 boxes and VAR's or OEM's downgrading

except maybe in the case of Windows 7 - people already moving UP were ready for that after Vista ....

at work here, we still have 80 computer that need replaced before April 30

Man, I'm still here !!!
I am seriously considering that because I flat out do not like Win 8, period.

very interesting insights!!! As many probably are, I'm now looking to get an updated PC with XP not being updated with patches etc. it's too old to update with the old chipsets etc. So all these options are making my head hurt. So i have - 1. get new desktop-WIN 7 or 8 keep old monitor and use desktop vise APPS, 2. one of these AIO with a touchscreen or 3. heaven forbid go back to Apple which i haven't used since USG used them what 1997ish? Daughter has an IMAC 27 and LOVES it. Figure i have till End of March and will hopefully figure it out by then.

Really like the Velocity computers, they don't put any bloat ware on them and their components are nice mid level.. 600 -1000 depending on what you get installed.
