Some sort of beetle

My son found this thing crawling across his bedroom floor last night---it seemed to be on the hunt.....digging down in the carpet in various places.
Had to use an LED flashlight to get a closeup---anyone know what the heck this thing is?

Happy Camper
Speaking of Grasshopper...

Not a great picture, but this little guy rode on my windshield for about a mile yesterday. I pulled over as soon as I could, clicked a pic, and nudged him off, so he is okay!

If this is digital, what mode do you shoot in to achieve this level of focus on such a small creature?

Is it a matter of having a good lens?

There's a lot I have to learn.

Just saw Kurt Peterson's reply after the original topic. AMAZING!
Great images, though.

Yep--their digital!--atleast all of mine are----I have a macro and supermacro mode setting on my camera but I also bought a macro lense that is awesome--it is quite the challenge and there is alot of post processing involved in some situations but the detail is worth it---it's a whole new world in "macro land". Here is the first shot I took right after I got my new macro lense---its a grain of salt on my kitchen counter.

Count, You can achieve a small Depth Of Feld (DOF) by using a low number for your aperture (ie... F2.8) on DSLR's or P&S cams. Most cameras have macro modes. SLR's it helps to have a macro capable lens as well. DOF is what really makes macro pictures something great, as you can see in grain of salt photo. Once you start playing with macros, you can start to adjust your aperture to get different depths of focus in your image.

Here are a few examples:

You can keep your subject in focus and really blur the background without having to post process them

In this you can see even the deeper in the flower you go the focus gets softer

Again you can see how the aperture has made a very small portion the point of focus in this image.

I did not use any software to help blur any parts of these.
