What these dolts ignored was this was a CAT 5!!! Only the 4th time in recorded history that a CAT 5 has hit the continental USA. All you had to do was look at any internet or news weather site to see the size and magnitude of this thing. It seems people have lost good ole common sense!!
Not to split hairs here but Katrina's intensity at landfall was 145 mph with a central pressure of 918 mb. This puts her as the third strongest recorded storm to ever hit the US, ahead of Andrew and behind Camille. So based on wind speed she was a category 4 but when we get a real idea of the amount of destruction the land falling wind speed may be kicked up. That's exactly what happend with Andrew, into the late 1990's Andrew was still considered to be a category 4 but once a reanalysis was done of the damage it was determined that the sustained winds were over 145 mph. Andrew was reclassified as a category 5 a few years ago.
