Dog detective examines fatal dog attacks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Last year, more than 30 people died in fatal dog attacks in the U.S., many of them children. Why these attacks continue to happen? That's a question local Canine Crime Scene Detective Jim Crosby has traveled the world to answer.

Last March, a 17-month-old boy was attacked and killed by a Rottweiler in a Northside Jacksonville neighborhood. In September, an 83-year-old man in Alabama was mauled to death by two dogs. The youngest of the fatal dog attack victims was a 2-day old baby in Pennsylvania.

And with this latest incident that makes 7 dead this year (5 kids, 2 senior adults).

If you own a dog, be reminded that they are animals, some are very powerful and they can attack without warning at any time. Never ever leave them alone with the young or the elderly. Treat them as you would a loaded gun, by that I mean keep them under control whether they have been nothing but lovable and peaceful pets.

It seems like people are so quick to just read the headlines rather than the facts!

First off the article says the body was COLD by the time the police arrived. Does that not ring something is not right....or are people so focused that the article said PIT, they neglected to see that oversight. If the grandmother supposedly woke up saw them ripping the girl to shreds and called 911, unless the police were coming from Maryland to Georgia, that baby should have had at the very minimum a luke warm body.

I think something else may have happened and they put the kid out with the dogs as a cover up.

Good point....

Each hour, the body temperature falls about 1.5 degrees.

It could be too, with social media, the story's are more readily available. When I was younger it was rare to hear of such things unless it was just down the street. I don't believe there has been any increase and/or decrease in the fatalities themselves, just in the stories....

I can totally see it:

People who are dumb enough to let a toddler watch herself while they're all passed out aren't going to be particularly proactive in responding to an emergency. My mental picture is of all these crackhead drunks laying around, then little girl gets killed, they take an hour to ponder what should be done about this, then they all decide they need to sober up before calling the cops. Plus it takes awhile to hide the drugs and paraphernalia - air out the house, hose it down with Febreeze.

Just my first impression.

The events do occur and thanks to social media you can now hear about it.

I totally blame all the adult humans at the house, first for not watching their toddler, and second for having 7 big dogs out in their yard and not watching them whether the toddler was in the yard with them or not, to me shows that they all were totally irresponsible. Agree these humans should not be allowed to propagate.

Update!

Pictured: The two-year-old girl mauled to death by SEVEN pit bulls - GA Daily News

The toddler lived in a modest, two-story house tucked away from the main road. The sheriff said four generations of the same family shared the home, including the child's 18-year-old mother, grandparents and two uncles who are still young boys.

The girl's grandmother, Michelle McIntyre, sat weeping on the tailgate of a pickup outside the home Thursday. Summer Laminack, the child's mother, sat next to her staring silently at the ground.

‘She's in shock,’ Barbara Brauda, a friend who was visiting the family, told The Associated Press before a man approached and asked a reporter to leave the property.

‘She hasn't been doing a whole lot of crying because she's still numb.’

This is why I am so anti-Pit/Pit type.
The family told deputies the dogs had never attacked a person, though one of them might have killed a cat, Smith said. He said relatives insisted the toddler would play with the dogs and even ‘use them as pillows while watching TV.’

Smith said the dogs looked healthy and well-fed, and investigators found no signs they were being used as fighting dogs by their owners.

‘They said they have never been aggressive to other people,’ he said. ‘Why they got started I have no idea.’

The two dogs that were not involved in the attack were spared. They were not pit bulls.

I'm done. :coffee:

I *believe* the sheriff wanted to arrest at a higher level charge. The prosecuter actually sets the charge depending on what can actually be proven, even though the sherriff may have wanted an arrest for something more severe. This was the best charge available.

In a small town, you may hear things and think you know things, because everybody is in everybody's business. But that doesn't mean it can be proven.

I actually was surprised that the charge was such a small one in comparison to what I heard.

Did that explanation make sense?

I can understand negligence or neglect, but cruelty?

Neglect probably doesn't carry the penalty that cruelty does, and they didn't think they could get a manslaughter charge to stick, so that's the best they could come up with.
