5 year old shot and killed by cop

Second shot hit snake
City Manager Bob Wade said rumors of overeager Noble officers are inaccurate. "I was told that they tried several ways to get the snake down, but it was still hissing at them and firmly lodged,” Wade said. "What I was told is that the owner of the home either suggested or agreed that they should go ahead and shoot the snake, and then everything happened from there.”

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents were told that officers decided to shoot the animal after being told there was a field behind them, said Jessica Brown, bureau spokeswoman.

"The first shot grazed the snake, and the second killed it,” Brown said.

Wade said he is 90 percent sure that the same bullet that killed the snake also killed Austin, but due to the trajectory of the shot and the fact that Austin and his grandfather were downhill, investigators have to be 100 percent certain.

So is that suppose to change my opinion??

If they absolutley had to shoot the snake they couldn't of waited until someone showed up with a shotgun and birdshot?

I mean that would be like be going out in my backyard and shooting at skeet with a 30.06 and then being surprised to find out that the round traveled a long way and did damage to something or someone.

It is beyond irresponsible to fire a gun like that up in the air unless your life was on the line and you had no other option which was not the case here.

I never said the cops shouldn't be punished for making a bad decision. I said they shouldn't be prosecuted. Apparently those with all the facts of the case, who aren't cop haters like your self agreed with me. I hope they never sucumbed to the political pressure like prosecutors in P.G. do all the time!
Here is the rest of the story for all you cop haters.

Oooo You Got Me I hate COPS .............. :killingme

I don't like the power structure, and that the DEMs force us to rely on the police, when it has been stated they are not here to protect us ... only file reports and maybe catch the criminal .... do they have a tough job, sure ... but whining about how dangerous the job is :jameo: ... STFU go back to your doughnut .....

I have had several run ins with the Po Po over the years ..... while generally Positive .... the arrogance and I am Right, you don't know what the #### your talking about ... is what I hate

I'm just trying to figure out why they felt the need to move the snake in the first place. If the morons had just left it alone, it would have left on its own.

You're correct in your deer analogy. The difference is they may have felt this snake could become an immenent threat,

I just don't understand how the cop could think that a snake in a tree could be an immenet threat. If they waited a couple hours the snake would have left the tree.

Am I supossed to believe that the snake could have jumped out of the tree at any point and tried to kill them so they shot it?

That's not true. Read my post. I disagree with a lot of people, it's only the people who want to always assume the police are the bad guys I believe have a dislike for the police. They don't see police as individuals making tough decisions, but as something else.

No I'm not. Despite your arrogance and your opinion of police, I would never abuse the tools entrusted to me for my own personal gain, or personal intersts. I have integrity, as do most of my fellow officers.

That's right. You call us to your house to fix a problem, and we just leave. I'm sure you will have plenty of nice things to say about us then as well. The article said they attempted numerous other ways to remove the snake, but to no avail.

I don't see anything wrong with the police saying, "Ma'am, we can't safely get the snake out. Shooting a snake is overkill. Call animal control."

You know what? I was driving home one morning shortly after midnight, and I saw a dog get hit. Several cars stopped, and we tried to keep the dog out of the road as it was flailing about. We waited until the police showed up. By that time, the dog had crawled into a culvert under someone's driveway. The owner came out, and he was trying to get the dog out. The police officer was nice enough to lend him his flashlight. You know what the cop said? "Sorry, we're not going to be able to help you get it out." The cop didn't even offer any ideas as to what the owner could do.

My point? If the cop didn't have a good way to get the snake down, he could have simply said to the owner, "Sorry, I'm not going to shoot a snake. Just go away and leave it alone and it will slither away."

What's wrong with doing that?

Answer: Wouldn't of looked like a "cool guy" shooting a snake out of a tree.

There is no other answer here.

They could of said there is nothing more we can do, if the homeowner protested they could of quoted rule #4 and why it is important not to just shoot rounds off in the air because of the damage it could cause.

Obviously these cops don't follow the firearms safe handling rules.

...as a PSA:

1. Treat all firearms as though they loaded.

2. Always keep a firearm pointed in a safe direction.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

4. Always be sure of your target and know what is behind it along the bullet's trajectory.

hmmmmmm

Cops don't show up for a snake in a birdhouse, they wouldn't show up for a baby possum I found years ago! Why wasn't Animal Control sent? Or "pest" removal? Really!?!?!!!

A snake in a birdhouse? Let nature take it course, duh.

Shooting a snake?! Thats Reno 911 stuff right there.

So sad. I'm sorry for the family of the child.

The article did state that the county did not have any animal controll officers.
